The man introduces himself as Rubeus Hagrid, but of course I already knew that. This is all such a shock that it's real! He leads us to a professor named Professor McGonogall, who shows us the fabled sorting hat. It sings a little song for our year, and it differs slightly from the song that was in the books. It's still pretty close, though. I wonder what house I'll get put in?
"Excuse me," a girl with glasses and brown hair pushes past me in a hurry to get somewhere. "Where's she going?" I wonder aloud. "That's Kira Kloud. It's said that she's come from the smartest wizarding family of all time. She's got a lot to live up to, she does," a nasally voice announces behind me. I swivel around to see a boy with glasses, braces, and short black hair. "And what makes you think that she can't?" I say back, putting my hands on my hips. "I never said she couldn't, I just said it was highly unlikely," the boy tries to defend himself. "Right, because that's completely different." The whole year, who have all begun listening now, laugh. I smirk, and he just stands there, bewildered. After a few minutes, he puts out his hand. "Douglas Douglas. We will do great things together in Ravenclaw." I smile and shake his hand. Everyone gasps, but I'm not done yet. "Nice to meet you, Douglas!" Every eye in the room is on me, and he smirks. I step a few inches away and spread out my arms. "Well, a milestone has just been made!" I announce. "I have made my first..." I pause for dramatic effect. "Archenemy." Then I turn my heel and go up to the front of the line.
We walk into a HUGE room, with many empty plates and 4 ginormous tables. I see the house colors on each table. Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Gryffindor. Each table awaits their new additions feverishly.
"Applegate, Kane!" Shouts Professor McGonogall. I see the boy I met at the platforms this morning walk up to the sorting hat. He looks as if he has been anticipating this for a while, calm and collected. He puts the hat on his head, and not 10 seconds after it has touched his skin, the hat shouts, "RAVENCLAW!" The Ravenclaw table applauds loudly and Kane walks over there, positively beaming. Next comes Airburn, Jasmine. She goes in Gryffindor. She looks slightly disappointed as she looks at a pair of twins sitting at the Hufflepuff table. Pippin Bread goes into Hufflepuff and Mandy Butterfly (I recognize her from the platforms too) goes into Ravenclaw along with the Kane boy. I see the boy who I just debated with, Douglas Douglas, who, as he expected, is sorted into Ravenclaw at the blink of an eye. Next is "Everlark, Amity." But where is she? I look around for anyone who might be making their way up, but she's nowhere to be found!
"Excuse me," says a small voice behind me. I look down to see a girl who's a little bit shorter than me (Ha! Shorter than me! That's new!) with bright red hair. She looks a lot like Rose Weasley, but I don't say anything in case it's just a coincidence. The girl worms her way through the crowd and puts the sorting hat on her head. "Hmm..." Says the hat (never thought I would say that sentence!). "This is a hard one. Brave, not a bad mind either. Sly, but not unkind. Too kind, perhaps, to be fit for Slytherin house. Perhaps Ravenclaw?" I see the girl- Amity- mouthing something. I look closer to see that she's mouthing the words, Not with Greg. Not with Greg. The hat chuckles and says "Not Ravenclaw, then! It's down to two... Better be... Hufflepuff!" Amity breaks into a grateful smile and practically skips to Hufflepuff, where another girl has been saving a seat that she was probably hoping was for the girl Amity.
All of a sudden, I hear Professor call my name. "Gregory, Rain?" My heart skips a beat. This is it, I guess! I walk over tentatively and place the hat on my head. I can't possibly be in Gryffindor! And I hope to the Gods that I'm not in Slytherin! Hufflepuff might be okay, but... The hat groans, cutting my train of thought off. "Stop doing my work for me! I sort here!" I giggle, and the hat pauses for a moment. I believe it is thinking. "Not very brave, I see, and too nice to be sly or cruel. A strong mind, though. A very strong mind. Hmm..." The hat thinks again. "One of the best minds in the century. Must be... RAVENCLAW!!!!" So the Harry Potter house quizzes I took over many computers and other devices must be accurate after all! I walk over to the Ravenclaw table and see the boy Kane from the platforms. I tilt my head ever so slightly and he nods. As I take a seat next to Kane, "Lander, Carter" is sorted into Hufflepuff and "Kloud, Kira" is sorted into Ravenclaw. She walks over to the Ravenclaw area and looks around nervously. I wave her over and she smiles gratefully. "You can sit here," I pat the seat next to me. "Thanks," Kira grins. I look back over to Professor McGonogall, and the next words to come out of her mouth are ones that I never thought I could ever hear in this very century. "Malfoy, Emma."
Everyone looks around to see who the newest Malfoy is, and who should approach but Emma, the shy girl from the train? I almost gasp loudly when Kane claps a hand over my mouth. "Don't want to be like those prejudiced Gryffindors. All evil go to Slytherin, all Malfoys are bad. And we are the stars if the show!" He whispers mockingly. "Thanks," I grin. "I'll watch out for that."
As expected, Emma is sorted into Slytherin, although I don't know how happily. She trudges over to the Slytherin table, sitting at the far corner in the back, far away from the other Slytherins. Humph. She might not be as bad as she seems.
The rest of the morning flies by, as Guinevere Mitchell and Aira Reyi join us at the Ravenclaw table and Arabella Niña and Grace Riverstone join the Gryffindors. It's all a blast! We finish the feast and are led to the common rooms. It's so cool how everyone else has a normal password, but we get to solve a riddle! "If no one is left on earth, what will become of it?" Asks the portrait. "I think the world will slowly repopulate, first starting with plants. Then everything will just happen again, perhaps slightly different, as nothing in this world is exactly the same." I answer, and the portrait smiles. "Very insightful. You may enter." And that's how I helped everyone in my house on my first day at Hogwarts!
I lay my stuff out on my bed and begin to sort my books into a portable bookshelf of sorts that I had brought with me. "Oh! You have an advanced copy of Hogwarts According to the Headmasters Themselves? I haven't read the extra section yet!" I look up to see a girl that I remember getting sorted earlier. It's Kira Kloud! I giggle. "Yeah, sure, you can have it. Just give it back! If you hurt my book, you DIE." Kira giggles. "I'm exactly the same way!" I high five her and then continue to sort my books while she sits on her bed a couple beds away.
Later in the night, I'm sitting in the common room rereading and marking up one of my schoolbooks when I see another person walk in from the side of the boys' dormitory. I continue to mark my book, not paying him any mind, when I see from the corner of my eye that he's only pretending to read (gasp!). From further evaluation, however, I conclude that he is actually watching ME while pretending to read. Well, if he's going to watch me, I might as well do something about it!
I clear my throat and the boy looks up in surprise. "Um... Hi," I approach slowly. "Rain Gregory." I hold out my hand. He looks at my hand, then back to me. "William Hart," He whispers, almost mouthing the words. And then he runs away.
