I awoke to the sound of my alarm clock, obnoxious as always. The beeping seemed to be getting louder and louder the longer I let it go on. I rolled over to pick up my iPad to shut it off but the alarm notification didn't show up. I jumped out of bed to follow the sound. It was coming from outside my door. I slowly opened it and my ears were bombarded by the loud alarm sound. It didn't take me long to realize it was the fire alarm. I glanced at the bathroom door. Lisa must have been having one of her famous hot showers. I grabbed a pillow and began swinging it around, below the alarm to get the air circulating. Finally it stopped but I could still hear the ringing in my ears. I opened the bathroom door just a crack, so that the hot air would escape from the bathroom. I went back to my bedroom and got dressed before heading downstairs. I rounded the corner of my stairs and entered give kitchen.
"Hey mom." I said. She was facing the stove and didn't turn around to greet my.
"Morning Lisa." She answered sweetly. I stood there confused for a moment. "Breakfast is on the counter. Sorry if it's cold." I looked over and took the plate to the table. Dad was already at work and my sister was either getting dressed or blow drying her hair with her music blasting. "You sure got out of the shower fast." She mumbled.
"Mom, I'm not Lisa." I finally spoke up. She whipped around and looked at me briefly before starting to scream.
"Who are you?!" She demanded. Her tone was unlike any I had ever heard from her before. "Don't make me ask again!" She yelled.
"Mom, it's me Skylar!" I yelled back.
"I don't know a Skylar! How did you get in my house?!" I took a step towards her and she leaned over grabbing a chefs knife. "Don't come any closer!" She exclaimed, pointing the knife at me.
"Mom..." I began, my voice was shaky and tears were starting to form in my eyes.
"Stop calling me that! I only have one daughter! Get out of my house before I call the police!" She screamed. Tears were streaming down my cheeks and I felt a lump in my throat that was growing bigger by the second. I walked to the front door and left. I started to walk to school and by the time I got there, I had stopped crying. I didn't have anything left to cry out. I arrived at school 20 minutes later. The bell still hadn't rung. I went up to my locker when I saw Kyle. He was the only person I wanted to see right now. He was surrounded by a bunch of his friends. I jogged up to him and went to go hug him when he dodged out of my reach. I frowned at him. He had a confused expression on his face. His eyes were empty. I went in to go and hug him again and he stepped back even further. I glanced around at all his friends. They all had the same expression of 'who the hell are you.'
"Kyle I really need a hug right now." I pleaded. My voice was still a little shaky.
"That's great for you. I have to go." He responded back to me before walking in the other direction. So many things were going through my mind. Is this a prank? Why is he doing this on our anniversary? Is he mad that I didn't message him yesterday? I had way to many question that I wanted answered. I spotted Alex walking down the halls. I bolted over to her.
"Omg I need someone to talk to. Kyle just acted like he didn't know me and when I went to hug him he back away." I was starting to talk faster and faster. "Is it a joke? Is he serious? I need your help!" I was starting to ramble.
She just walked past me, giving me a dirty look as if to say 'how dare you talk to me.' I went to my locker and grabbed my books. I went to my class and sat down just as the bell rang. The teacher came in and glanced at me.
"Did you transfer in my class?" He asked me.
Oh god, not him too!
"No my name is Jade Evans."
"Hmmm, are you a new student? I don't have a Jade in my class."
"I'm not a new student." I responded. At this point it was just getting ridiculous.
"Ok well, I'm going to have to ask you to leave if you're not in my class."
I grabbed my books and went back to my locker. I started pacing, not knowing what to do. My mom didn't know me, my boyfriend and best friend didn't know me, and my teacher didn't know me. Is this one big prank? The question was swirling around in my head. Why would everyone do this? The worst part was, I had no where to go. Everyone I talked to either didn't remember me or was pretending not to know me. My pacing got more intense. I finally decided to grab what I needed and go to a shelter. It wasn't my ideal situation but it was all I could do. At least I would have a place to sleep for the night and be able to figure out a plan. I had my phone with me, it was still at 100% surprisingly. I shut it off to conserve battery. I grabbed my backpack and put my gym clothes in it. I zipped it up and walked out of the school. Realization hit me that I was completely alone from here on out. The thought of all of this being a prank was still in my head, but the longer I walked along the street, the smaller the thought got. I just couldn't come up with a plausible explanation for why everyone would 'prank' me like this.
I strolled up to the entrance of the shelter. I slowly pushed the doors open and a young girl, about my age came up to me. She looked sad when she saw me but put a smile on her face anyways. She welcomed me in and gave me a space to stay after I explained my situation. All I told her was that my mom kicked me out of the house and I had nowhere to go. It wasn't a lie. I set my things down in my little corner space and started thinking about what I was supposed to do about this. I knew one thing for certain though, I couldn't live out of a shelter.
