Shiranui's friend was Takasugi Shinsaku. He died of tuberculosis and Shiranui does mention that his friend got sick and died, so that was pretty much in keeping with historical fact. Takasugi's teacher was Yoshida Shouin, who died about the same way as described in Hakuouki, too. The poem Shiranui quotes is supposed to be Yoshida's death poem, the poem went like this:
"身はたとい 武蔵の野辺に朽ちぬとも 留め置かまし 大和魂."
"Even if my body rots on the Musashi plain the Japanese spirit will remain." ~Shiranui
The quote/Poem was when he was talking to Sanosuke Harada. The video is there scenes together. I swear there like brothers! I didn't pay attach-ion to the song so if something wrong I had to involvement just saying, XD
