The captain of the tenth division of the Shinsengumi. He is skilled with a spear, using it as his weapon of choice instead of the sword. His character is historically based on the real Harada Sanosuke.

Appearance:
Sanosuke is The tallest Among the Captain standing at 5' 10" He has Dark Amber eyes and Auburn hair, worn long in the first season and cut shorter later on. His traditional Japanese wardrobe consists of a modified white kataginu with red trimming, a red bandage-like obi, red hand guards, and gray hakama.

His Western clothing in the second season consists of a white shirt with a black vest and a long black-and-white sleeveless jacket lined with the same red of his wafuku, red hand guards of a Western style to match, a white belt to hold his sword, and black trousers and boots. He has a significant scar across his stomach from a failed attempt at suicide, another trait that he shared with his real historical counterpart.

Personality:
Sanosuke Harada is one of the most cheerful of the Shinsengumi, and can usually be found making jokes with Shinpachi and making people smile. He can be quick to anger, as seen when a slip of Heisuke's tongue alarms him enough to throw a punch at the younger officer to silence him, but despite his temper and his tendency to be laid back when he isn't concerned, he is also very friendly and loyal. He prefers the spear to the sword, a notable similarity to the historical Harada Sanosuke.

Plot:
Season 2:
Sanosuke and Shinpachi begin to feel uncomfortable with Kondou's aspirations to become daimyo and eventually leave the Shinsengumi. Near the end, Sanosuke reappears on the battlefield, teaming up once again with his rival Shiranui Kyou to defeat Koudou and his Rasetsu army, and is gravely wounded in the ensuing battle. He is last seen having a brief, quiet conversation with Shiranui while leaning against a tree, his hands placed over his wound, and his eyes losing their usual glint. His ultimate fate is left unclear.

Hakuouki SSL:
In Hakuouki SSL, Sano is the Health & Physical Education teacher, whose frank personality wins him a high popularity among students. he also has a nasty habit of breaking the rules every so often, such as running in the halls because he was late for class.

Trivia:
•Besides Kazama, Sanosuke is the only one of Chizuru's possible partners in the games who never becomes Rasetsu in any of the routes. In the anime adaptation, Saitou does not either.
•In the game, he's the only one to have a child with Chizuru.
•Sanosuke takes great pride in his scar, just as the real Harada supposedly did, despite it being the result of a failed seppuku attempt over a quarrel. He claims that it's a symbol of bravery.
•While the real Harada is thought to have died of his wounds during the Boshin War, Sanosuke's and Saitou's endings in the game choose to follow the alternative account that suggests he may have survived the war and traveled westward to live on the Manchurian Plain.
•Sanosuke is the only character in the game to use a weapon other than a sword, instead, he uses a spear; specifically a Su-Yari type spear.
•Sano Has theme music in the anime, yet it is only used in the SSL OVA.

Kondō Isami (近藤 勇 Kondō Isami) is the commander of the shinsengumi whom everyone looks up to & admires, He also raised Okita Souji from when he was 9 years old & is a surrogate father/older brother to him. Kondou is very close friends with Toshizo Hijikata and often looks to him for his opinion on important matters.

His character is historically based.

Personality:
Kondou is an passionate, hard-working & very kind individual, although Hijikata has warned him about being too naive at times, Kondou is extremely trusting of others & always gives them the benefit of the doubt, believing that there is good in everyone. Despite all of his seemingly "weak" qualities, Kondou is incredibly strong mentally & physically.

Season 1:
Kondou is first seen in the meeting room when Gen brings in Chizuru to be questioned. Kondou inhabitually starts introducing everyone to her, until Hijikata stopped him say how it wasn't necessary seeing as "He" was a prisoner.

The Ikedaya Incident:
thanks to the hard work of Yamazaki & Shimada, The Shinsengumi managed to find out about an important Choushu meeting that was taking place right under their noses. The location of the meeting, however, was unknown. Kondou & Hijikata decided to split up into two groups, Hijikata took 20 men including Harada & Saitou, leaving Kondou with only 10 men plus Souji, Heisuke, Chizuru & Shinpachi. Hijikata's group went to Shikoku Inn While Kondou's Group headed to the Ikedaya Inn.

Later on, after the assassination of Itou, Kondou is mortally wounded in a revenge assassination attempt While returning from a meeting with the Shogun. This leaves everyone angry & worried for Kondou's sake, Souji becomes particularly angry & blames himself for Kondou's injury because he was too weak from his TB to go with him, which causes Souji to drink ochimizu in order to take revenge for Kondou. Souji acomplishes his revenge, but at the cost of being shot also, but with silver bullets.

Season 2:
Through lies & promises of the shogun, Kondou now wants to become a daimyo. His hunger for social status leads to lose sight of his goals for the Shinsengumi, leading to mass bloodshed during their first battle after fleeing to Edo at a castle the Aizu said they would Give to Kondou if he could reclaim it from the choushu, which, in the end, turned out to be nothing more than an attempt to extinguish the Shinsengumi for the shogun's political plans.

All the same, This power thirst disturbs Shinpachi and takes leave the Shinsengumi, taking Sanosuke with him. Later on, Kondou realizes what he did, and racked with guilt, sacrifices himself to the choushu, so that Hijikata and Chizuru can escape from Aizu, where they were cornered by enemies.

His sacrifice angers and saddens Hijikata so much that Hijikata nearly cried and caused him to actually destroy an entire troop of enemy soldiers out of anger. Although Hijikata persistently begged for the enemy to spare Kondou, they have had no contact from him after he sacrificed himself to the other side. It's implied that he was executed, by beheading...

Hakuouki SSL:
In SSL, Kondou is the head principal of Hakuouki academy & is also the coach for the kendo club, although he seems to take his kendo training a bit too seriously as he will sometimes practice in the halls, much to Vice-principal Hijikata's disapproval.

Trivia:
•Kondou has bragged that he can fit his entire fist in his mouth.
•In real life, Kondou had a wife & daughter back at his home in Hino, they were mentioned in the game, but not in the anime.
•Kondou has theme music in the anime.
•Much like Hijikata & Souji, Kondou was the youngest in his family of two older brothers & lost his mother at a young age.
•In real life Kondou was executed for the murder of Ryōma Sakamoto.
