4: Marcel from Marketing
Rachel had me organize the files, which wasn’t hard as I knew the alphabet by now. Most of them were contracts the studios had with celebrities; big names like Jennifer Lopez and Brad Pitt. It was mind-numbing, but it was a step towards what I wanted.
I spent my time doing this calming my rapidly beating heart. I had just met, and helped One Direction. This was ultimately the best day of my life!
After about an hour, the door reopened and I heard the parting words of the boys spoken to my father and Jonny. They appeared in the front office, all wearing their perfect grins.
“Well, boys,” Rachel purred, “Did you get everything figured out?”
I watched from my place at the filing cabinet as Niall nodded, and clarified, “We’re recording after lunch, which is good. I’m starving.” His joke forced me to hold back a giggle.
“It’s all thanks to Veronica,” Liam purred. His soft eyes locked on my image, making me hide my reddened, blushing cheeks behind a veil of my hair.
Rachel’s pointed finger found me, and her gaze stared me down using a non-intimidating jauntiness which struck no fear through me. “I honestly don’twant to know.” I could tell she was holding back a grin and a laugh.
Out of nowhere, Louis and Liam felt the need to let Rachel know how I had helped the biggest band on the planet. He simplified it really, and showed her the lyrics crossed out and replaced with my messy, yet still legible handwriting. I paid no attention to his summary, as I had just lived through it. Instead, something else came into my ears.
“I wanna go see Marcel before we get a bite,” Harry muttered to Zayn.
“Oh, really?” Zayn asked.
“Yeah,” Harry purred, “He started working here today in marketing.”
“That’s cool,” Zayn remarked, “Good for him.”
“Well, Veronica,” Rachel’s voice picked up again. Liam was shoving the lyrics back into his pocket, so I assumed his story was done being told. “I must say, I’m impressed.” As quickly as her gaze met mine, it returned to at least one of the five boys. “You all better go and eat.”
“Before we go,” Harry purred, “Where’s the marketing department? I need to check in on someone.”
“I can show you.”
Once again, the words flew from my mouth before my brain could track their origin and whether or not an outburst was a good idea. Rachel’s eyes clouded over, but the boys of One Direction were on my side since I’d fixed their lyrics. It took one, “Sure,” from Liam, and I was using my knowledge of the tour earlier, as well as the fact I was born into this company to navigate the halls with the five of them on my heels.
“Why are we doing this, Harry?” Niall whined, “I’m starving!”
“I want to see Marcel,” Harry replied simply.
“But I’m hungry!” Niall objected.
“If you stop whining,” Liam began in a sigh, “I’ll let you pick where we eat.”
This decision immediately arose groans from Louis and Zayn, who had remained quiet this entire time. When questioned, Zayn felt the need to moan, “You know he’s just going to pick Nando’s again!”
“Way to go, Liam,” Louis mumbled sarcastically.
Their complaints continued all the way down a few floors to the marketing department. It made me feel amazing to be leading the boys of One Direction through my dad’s company building, that was, until we made it to our destination, and Harry – the perfect teen heartthrob – found his nerdy brother.
They hugged each other, and Marcel either hugged or fist-bumped or high-fived the remaining four. I could see they were like a family, and I was just their tour guide. I stayed behind the boys, until I was brought forward by fate, disguised as a brown-haired boy in nerd glasses.
“V-Veronica?” Marcel stuttered, acknowledging my existence and presence here with his brother and his band.
“You know her?” Harry asked.
“S-she’s in my algebra c-class,” he clarified.
I shot the nerd a smile when he gave me a wide grin, but, now, my reputation was at stake. If Marcel could tell his brother I had any prior connection to him, he could tell my friends at school I was a working woman.
“Cool,” Zayn acknowledged.
“Nando’s!” Niall burst. It caused us all to turn to the blonde as his sudden word nearly gave me a heart attack.
“Harry, I think we’d better go,” Liam suggested. Even I had to agree with him. If Niall’s appetite was half of what the internet made it out to be, his stomach was already likely trying to eat itself.
“Want to come with us?” Harry asked his brother.
The nerd agreed – after all, it was his family who had asked him – and Harry slipped his tattooed arm over Marcel’s shoulder.
“Maybe after you can come watch us record the Best Song Ever,” Louis added. “We can probably get you off work.”
“You can come, too Veronica,” purred Zayn, startling me at the mention of my name. I looked at them oddly, not believing their invitation. But Liam concluded with telling me they could get me off work as well, before they left on their way to Nando’s. They left me standing there, awestruck. Not only had I just met One Direction, I would hear their newest song – one I helped write – before anyone else!
