The girl sighed as she sat on her bed. Well it wasn’t really a bed, more like a mattress. She ran her fingers threw her platinum blonde hair, deep in thought.

‘You’ve been waiting for this moment your whole life, you can do this.’

She took a deep breathe then reached behind her, dragging her fingers along her back until she felt it, a feather. She pulled the feather out of her back, it was very painful but she didn’t acknowledge it, she was taught to bear the pain. The feather was covered in blood, she let go of it and watched it fall to the floor. She started to pull and yank on the tank top she wore until there was enough room for her wings to sprout. They were beautiful, pure white wings, anyone would be proud to have them, but she did not smile. This was a lonely life, a life that was chosen for her, a life that she did not wish to have.

She walked over to her desk and sat in her chair then start to work. Using the woodworking tools around her, she made an arrow, an extremely sharp yet non-fatal arrow. Then she got up and walked outside, time for her first day (or night) on the job. It was dark so she wouldn’t be seen, this was always an unfunny joke between her teachers.

Always go out at night so you won’t be seen, young one.

She had always thought this was a stupid rule since she was invisible, nevertheless she followed their orders.

She walked down an alley and saw two girls. One of the other girls was talking and the other was listening, with clear love and admiration in her eyes. The talking girl was clearly oblivious to her friends love for her.

‘This is what I was born for.’

She aimed the bow and fired, hitting the talking girl straight in the back, then she watched and waited with baited breath. The talking girl suddenly froze and stared at her companion, her friend smiled but was clearly confused. The girl who was previously talking grabbed her friend and pushed her gently against the brick alley wall. The two girls kissed, it was a passionate kiss. Loving, caring, gentle sweet, true loves kiss.

The girl with the wings watched the scene in front of her, she should have felt proud but she didn’t. She didn’t know what she felt, all she knew was that it hurt. She ignored the pain and continued with her job, she walked away from the alley and kept going until dawn.

Nights went by and that’s all the girl would do, help people fall in love. Anyone else would love to be in her position but she couldn’t help but think,

‘Will I ever fall in love?’

Her teachers never mentioned her finding true love, only helping humans find their perfect match. It wasn’t fair and she was getting fed up.

One night she was walking by a seemingly empty café, but the lights were on. She walked inside and saw a man with red hair, he was extremely handsome and she wondered why he was alone. She wanted to ask but instead she sat down a few tables from him and thought. It wasn’t fair that some people were lonely, almost everyone deserved to meet their other half. She imagined herself and the man with the red hair falling in love and she almost smiled. Of course this was real life and things like that didn’t happen to people like her.

Why? Why? Why? Why couldn’t she have someone to love, someone who would care for her and hold her when she got upset? The girl with the wings suddenly got angry, extremely angry. She got up, stormed out of the café and headed straight to a club. Inside she saw sweaty bodies, people grinding, dancing, and kissing. These people didn’t deserve true love, they deserved teenage pregnancy and STDs. All these bitter thoughts fuelled her anger, it just wasn’t fair that it was her job to help these disgusting people find their true love. Blinded by fury, she pulled out her arrow and began stabbing people. Using a bow would be too kind, of course the people felt no pain but she was too angry to see reason. People began falling in love everywhere, women kissing women, men kissing men, and women kissing me. Soon the pain became too much to bare and all the doe-eyed new couples made her feel overwhelmed, she ran home as fast as her legs would take her.

She collapsed into her mattress and completely broke down. The girl with the wings sobbed her heart out, until she cry anymore. After a few minutes she took a few deep breaths and thought.

‘I can’t do this.’

‘I’m invisible.’

‘No one cares about me.’

‘I want to die…’

A wry smiled crossed her face and she grabbed her arrow which had fallen on the floor then laid down on her back.

‘This is it. Why haven’t I thought of this before? If this things cause’s true love then maybe someone will care about me, maybe someone will love me. I won’t have to watch everyone around me be happy then come home miserable. I could make people fall in love then come home to someone who loves me. That would be amazing…’

She took a deep breathe then plunged the arrow straight into her heart.

She gasped.

The girl was in unimaginable agony. It felt like molten hot lava was poured into her heart and then it started traveling around her body through her veins.

She tried to scream but no sound came out, blood was pouring out of the wound at an alarming rate and it soaked her mattress. Hot tears streamed down her face, she turned on her side and took her final breathes. Soon her heart stopped beating, with the arrow in it.
