- Thea's POV -
"How do you know they didn't follow you?" Luke asked me.
"Luke, they would have found me by now if they had followed me." I answered, brushing my brown hair away from my face.
"You know, those green eyes of yours could give the elution of...You know what."
"I'm not lying." Luke always referred to my green eyes whenever he thought I was lying.
"Yeah, sure you're not." He smirked.
I thrust my fork into the canned pork and started stuffing my mouth with it, trying to keep the anger down. Our camp was simple with a fire, two one man tents, a sack of food and camping gear, and an old Chevy truck. We were running. Well, I was running and poor Luke got caught up in it.
"Can you pass me the coffee?" He asked.
I made a face that said, 'why do you like coffee?' and he had obviously seen it for he said, "I don't understand why you don't like coffee."
"Because it's bitter and fills your body with unwanted caffeine. You're addicted to that stuff."
"Well you're addicted to milk."
"Well, unlike coffee, milk is actually healthy for you."
"Yeah, and we all know you to be a HUGE health nut." He answered, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
We had an interesting relationship. It probably helped that I had known him all my life and he was practically my brother, so that's pretty much how we always communicated. It was funny, but sometimes I felt as though I couldn't stand him. He was like an old house that you've had forever. You were so bored of it and thought you'd die from boredom. But once it's gone you wish it was back. He had black hair and gray eyes, and was sort of average height. I was over average, so that made us pretty much the same size. He was maybe a half inch taller or so. It was hard to tell.
"How did you get into this mess in the first place, Thea?" He asked.
"Hmm?...Oh...Um...I'm not actually sure."
"Your not sure?!?"
"Well, I don't even know what he wanted me for. He said something about the government...And how I had some sort of thingy mabob....I don't know. It was very confusing."
"Do you know the man looked like?"
"Nope. He always had his face covered."
"I really don't know what to do, T. We can't keep running for the rest of our lives."
I looked down at the half full can of pork in my hands.
"That's all we can do. We have no choice, Luke." I sighed.
"I don't like it any more then you did. I wish we could just, stop and take a breather. Enjoy life. But that just really isn't an option at the moment.
"You're probably right." He dumped the remains of his coffee into the fire and I quickly ate the last of the pork.
It wasn't quite dark yet, but we had to have the fire out before night came. You never know who could be watching and fire can be seen for miles, even in a forest.
"Where is the nearest town?" I asked.
Luke pulled out a map and then said, "Hoqui. Maybe a five hour drive from here."
"How big is it?"
"It's pretty small. I don't think we'd run into any government officials there."
"Good. I could use a bed for at least one night."
- I know, I know. A very short chapter for such a long wait, but I couldn't really say more in this one. I'll try and make the others longer. Again, I'm sorry for the long wait, but I needed a break. I love writing this story and all, but sometimes you just got to lay back and smell the roses. LOL. Anyway, hope you liked the chapter and if you did, don't forget to comment and vote. Thanks :D - Anna
