A/N Hey guys so originally this was going to be a oneshot but I realized that I had too many ideas for it to be just a oneshot so I decided to make it into a mini fanfiction, like maybe 10 or so chapters. I'm not sure but it won't be a mega long one but hopefully you'll still like it :)
Also I'm currently writing a Supernatural High School fanfiction and I was wondering if anyone would be interested if I put it up here?
By the way 'Beaver Lake' is an actual place but this isn't an advertisement or anything I was just looking for campsites in South Dakota and liked the look of it ;)
Thanks and Enjoy!
"Cas why is camping necessary?" Dean complained as Castiel forced him to drive to a campsite called 'Beaver Lake'.
"Because you said that you were going to take a vacation from hunting for a bit so I thought that unwinding in the great outdoors and appreciating god's creations would be a good way to spend it." Castiel replied as he directed Dean from the shotgun seat, Sam frowning in the backseat.
He wasn't happy about this either because Castiel had forbidden him to bring his laptop with him and that thing was like a child to him but he was trying his hardest to embrace it anyway because he knew Castiel had worked really hard on organizing this trip for them.
"Well honestly I'd have preferred to spend it drinking beer and watching porn at Bobby's." Dean replied with an annoyed look.
Sam was surprised. Usually Dean would do anything Castiel said just to make him happy, within reason of course, but now he was just whining about it like a toddler.
Sam however was optimistic "Cas is right Dean, maybe it would be fun to get out of the bunker and away from hunting for a bit." He replied and Dean threw an empty beer can back at Sam's head "Shut up Sam you tree hugging dork." He grunted and Sam rolled his eyes "Stop whining you baby." He smirked and Dean just huffed and scowled, pouting like a child until they arrived at 'Beaver lake campground'.
Dean parked the Impala in the dirt area that was marked 'Parking lot' with a simple wooden sign stuck into the dry ground. He sighed "Not even my baby should be here. She's going to get dusty."
Sam rolled his eyes again "Dean seriously?"
Dean shot him a glare but said nothing and just grabbed his bags from the back and muttered "Let's go then." and stomped off after Castiel into the woods.
Sam sighed and followed after him, picking up the keys from the ground where Dean had thrown them and locking the Impala after he'd retrieved his own bags from the trunk.
"Welcome to our campsite Dean." Castiel announced excitedly as they reached a clearing which had a fire pit and a tap and that was about it.
Dean scowled as he tossed his bags on the ground "Um..Cas where are we sleeping? And where are the bathrooms?"
Castiel gave Dean a look like he was crazy "We have tents Dean, and for a few days nature will be our bathroom." He replied and Dean's eyes widened "No way, this sucks!" He complained and Sam could see the hurt in Castiel's eyes.
He'd tried so hard to make this trip perfect for them and now Dean was just stamping on it. He gave his older brother a stern look "I think it sounds great Cas." He replied, trying to cheer the angel up.
Castiel tried a small smile but it wasn't very convincing "Thanks.. anyway we should probably get the tents set up if we want a bed tonight." He said, starting to get excited again but his face fell again when he saw Dean just sat in the dirt, playing about in it with a stick and scowling.
He'd been acting very oddly moody and quiet ever since he'd suggested going camping and he didn't know why.
Sam decided to take this as a cue to leave and give them some privacy so he announced "I'm just gonna go use the..nature." and then walked off into the forest.
Castiel chuckled quietly at what Sam said but Dean didn't even smile or react at all, he just continued to draw in the dirt and this was when Castiel knew something was wrong.
He sat down beside Dean, not caring that his trousers were getting dirty "Dean is something the matter? You seem upset." He asked softly, giving Dean a wide eyed, concerned look.
Dean glanced up with a moody expression "Yeah I'm fine.." He lied under his breath and Castiel could instantly tell that he was lying "Dean don't lie to me."
Dean then suddenly snapped "I'm not lying now leave me alone!"
This really hurt Castiel who despised being shouted at, especially by Dean and his head drooped, his big blue eyes filling with tears "Oh..sorry Dean. I'll leave you to your thoughts." He mumbled and went to stand up when he felt Dean's hand grab his, pulling him back down again.
Castiel flinched, afraid that Dean was going to hurt him but he knew his fears were irrational when he locked eyes with the hunter and saw all his anger fade away, replaced with guilt. He should've known that Dean would never hurt him.
"Cas..I'm so sorry..god why am I such a dick?!" He muttered angrily but this time the anger was directed at himself.
Castiel looked at Dean and then slowly reached out a hand and put it on Dean's knee which was closest to him "Dean you are not a..dick. You're only being like this because something is bothering you. Now please confide in me as to what it is."
The softness and genuine care in Castiel's voice was what broke the usually so closed off Dean and he let out a loud sigh before mumbling "I haven't had..the best experiences with..camping."
Castiel tilted his head curiously "What happened Dean?"
Dean sighed once more before launching into an explanation.
"Back when I was 13 and Sammy was 9 dad took us on a camping trip as a treat. We were both so excited..especially Sammy. He's a total nature lover, always has been. We were having a great time..until I decided to light a fire. Dad totally flipped. That was the first time I saw him completely lose the plot. He just screamed and..quickly put it out then..he shouted at me for being an idiot and trying to kill us..then he..he.." Dean voice cracked as his hand brushed an old scar behind his left ear and he looked right down at the ground. "he hit me.."
Castiel's eyes widened and a sad and pitying look appeared on his face "Dean..I don't know what to say.."
But Dean kept going "Of course I didn't take it lying down, I hit him back and..I ran away after that. I ended up living with Bobby for a good few weeks until he finally forced me to start hunting with him again but I only did it for Sammy because he was missing me..I guess he still wasn't over mom's death and he never was. That's why I never wanna fall in love..I don't want to end up like dad if I lose them."
Castiel listened to the whole tragic story with a sad expression and an aching heart and by the end of Dean's heart wrenching story the angel could see the memories had brought him close to tears and without thinking he put his arm around the hunter and pulled him against him gently "I'm so sorry Dean.."
Dean accepted Castiel's hug and rested his head on Castiel's shoulder, allowing a few of his tears to spill before he pulled himself together, pulling away and sniffing "I..It's okay Cas.." He replied but Castiel knew it wouldn't be okay unless he did something about it. So he decided to try and make up for Dean's horrible previous camping experience and make one he'd never forget.
"Why don't you help me put up our tent Dean?" Castiel suggested to get Dean's mind off of his father and his childhood and much to his relief Dean nodded and started helping the angel pitch their tent and by the time Sam returned from 'using the bathroom' Dean was smiling.
A/N Hope you guys liked it :)
I know there wasn't much actual 'camping' is this chapter but it's just sort of setting the plot, the fluff will come soon don't worry ;)
