After calling our family's and explaining that we had been accepted into a boarding school and where leaving right away, a lie by my own design. We settled into the cab, just watching the trees pass by. It was calming enough and I didn't realize it was getting dark till the taxi driver, Steve, pulled over. "This is as far as I can take you for tonight. Just get a room in the motel or something."
We got out, thankfully only having two backpacks to carry out. The car drove off and I looked at the motel behind us. It wasn't shady looking, it was seemingly normal for a motel. I didn't know what to think about the place.
"Let's go inside. Or do you wanna sit and look like an idiot?" Blake sounded like he hated the world right now, so I'm going to cut him some slack.
Sighing I waved him off and entered the motel. The Sunny Smiles motel had an 80's theme. It was bright yellow with orange designs that clashed horribly. I'm not usually one for picking on designs but this was hideous! Blake made a noise of discomfort, he was probably thinking the same thing I was.
Walking up to the desk, I rang the bell. Not a moment later a boy about the age of 13 came up. His shaggy black hair looked like Harry Potter's was described in the first book. His skin had a dark tint to it, like he spent too long outside in the sun. When he looked up his eyes were grey. Just grey. No hints of blue or green.
"Hi, can I help you?" His voice was high.
I smiled, "Yes, we would like a room with two beds please."
He paled, "I'm sorry miss but the room that we have that has two beds is being taken by a pair of brothers."
"What kinda hotel doesn't have more than two rooms with double beds?!" Blake growled out.
The boy flinched and I sighed, "Its okay. One of us will just have to sleep on the floor."
"Well I'm not doing that. It might ruin my beautiful face!" He put a hand to his face and struck a dramatic pose. I raised an eyebrow and the boy giggled.
"Well here's your room key and you can pay on your way out. My names Arthur if you need me just ring!" He was oddly cheerful, I smiled at him while Blake just shrugged him off.
"Arthur!! Stop bothering the guest and fetch me another beer!" A gruff voice called from the back room.
Arthur flinched, "Yes father. Let me show these two too there room first."
There was a noise of disagreement from the back room but Arthur just waved it off. He made a motion to follow him and we did. We traveled down the hall and came to a room. He unlocked the door and opened it. The room looked like a 70's sitcom. I thought it was funny. Blake made a noise of disgust. I guess he wasn't a fan of the design.
Arthur sighed, "Like I said, if you need anything I'll be right down. "
"Arthur! Get over here you ungrateful child!" Arthur's father yelled.
Arthur flinched and nodded to us in his way out. I stood there confused and Blake didn't look any happier. I looked at him, and he seemed to be debating something.
"I don't like that. Why is his father so...." Blake trailed off not able to find the word.
"Aggressive?" I put in my input.
He nodded. For once I agreed with the fool of a boy. Something didn't seem right there. The way Arthur flinched when his father spoke... My thoughts wandered.
Shaking his head Blake plopped down on the bed, "We can't do anything as of now. But I would say... one of us should stay up. Just incase."
I nodded. We both knew what the other was thinking. And i didn't like the train of thought. At all. But he was right. There was nothing we could do about it.
"You go to sleep, April. You look like your about to pass out." His voice was almost... calm. For once I didn't hate the guy.
Closing my eyes I laid on the bed and buried myself in the covers. Sleep came almost instantly. But I still didn't trust it.
-------
I was back at the school. But things where different. The school itself hadn't changed. But instead of being alone like the last time there was four more people. One a girl, she was taller than me by what? Three inches? She had curly dark brown hair that went down to her back and she looked over confident. The other was Arthur, he looked to have been hurt but the determination in his eyes threw me off. Blake, stood up taller than the rest. We all looked tired.I felt my body move on its own. I couldn't hear anything but from my hand gestures I could tell I was talking. Arthur nodded along, while Blake stood silently. The girl seemed to be listening but her eyes focused on the school. I turned and looked at the school. Then Arthur, Blake, and the girl, all walked up. I seemed to hesitate and then I joined them.
-------
I jolted awake as Blake shook me. His eyes looked worried and frantic and I could tell something was off."It's Arthur." His voice was tight.
I didn't say anything but I rushed into the front room. Arthur was there and was crying. He was shaking violently. More violent than anything I've ever seen. He had a bruise on his skin. A fist sized bruise right on his jaw.
I grabbed his hand and led him back to our room. He kept murmuring, "I did it again. I used magic again. I'm sorry" he repeated that over and over again.
"It's okay. Your going to be okay." Blake brought him into a hug the second we reached the room.
"No it's not!! I'm a freak show! I can do magic!" Arthur's voice was tired and he held up his hand, palm up and a fire shot out of it. It wasn't just anymore it looked as though it was made of all the colors in the world. It was beautiful.
"Yes it is. Listen, today me and April got attacked by our principal who turned out to have powers. During the whole fiasco I punched her and she acted like a bullet went through her. April was glowing. And afterwards I punched a glass window and I didn't get hurt. Your no more a freak show than us." At those words Arthur calmed down and I spoke up.
"Me and Blake are going to a school. One where we might be safe. Please Arthur. Join us." My voice was humorless and even then I could hear the desperation in it.
Arthur looked at us with determination in his eyes, the very determination I saw in the dream. His voice came out stronger than I had ever heard it. "Okay."
