Chapter One: The start to a good day
Abigail's Pov...
——Rain always seemed to calm me down especially when it rains early in the morning. I continued to stare out of my window, admiring the raindrops splash on the lawn. What captivated me the most of this particular weather is the sound of rain. It pleased me. My phone vibrated underneath my hand, a signal to wake up the rest of the house.
I shut the window and made my way to grab a coat from my closet. Stopping in front of the full length mirror to see if I look presentable. Once I am pleased with my look,I grabbed my laptop bag, slinging it over my neck and walked out of my room, shutting the door on the way out. My first stop is to wake up my twin boys. I push open their door, the slow creak of the hinges give me away. I walk in and jump around the scattered toys until I make it to their beds. I look between them, deciding on who I should wake up first.
I flick on the light switch on the lamp which sits on their shared bedside table. Sitting on Lucas' covers, I begin to kiss his cheek while ruffling his hair. "Lucas, wake up," I whispered into his ear.
He pushed me away and dug himself deeper under his covers. "I do not want to get up," he whined.
"That's too bad buddy because you're going to school either way. Now get up." I stood up to wake up Noah but unlike his older brother he knows when he has to get up for school.
"Morning mommy," Noah croaks, sleep still coursing through his body.
"Morning, babies. Be ready in fifteen minutes. I have a very important presentation today and I need to be in the office earlier than usual." I kiss them both on the cheeks before walking out of the room.
As I walk to Olivia's room to wake her up, to my surprise she walks out of her room ready for the day. A sly smirk plays on her lips as she waves a hello. "Morning, mom."
"Morning. I see you're ready," I look down at the duffle bag hanging around her shoulder.
"I am. You did say to wake up early today. I'll be waiting in the kitchen." She walks to the end of the hallway and down the steps. I can always count on her and today displays that.
As I made my way down the stairs, the twins come running down laughing as they pushed me aside. ¨Hurry mommy or we will be late," they say together.
I rolled my eyes and jogged down, they did have a point. I rounded the corner to the kitchen where Olivia was preparing herself a bowl of cereal. I gave her cheek a pat before brewing myself a cup of coffee. The twins always wanted the same breakfast so I cooked a quick grilled cheese and placed them on a plate on the counter. As I waited for the coffee to brew, I checked my emails and messages until I saw a message that drained the color off my face.
¨Olivia, take your bowl. The meeting is moved, and it starts in thirty minutes." I stopped the coffee machine and quickly wrapped the sandwiches. Olivia rushed out of the kitchen and I could hear her gathering up the twins and telling them to wear their coats. ¨Fucking shit," I mumbled dejectedly.
No time to curse or to enjoy a cup of coffee. I managed to gather the kids into the car in five minutes which is a record compared to other days. I closed the door and covered my bag with my coat as I rushed to the driveway and did not take notice of the mud, it resulted in my boot heel sinking into the wet grass. "Are you kidding me?" I grumbled.
Thankfully, I made it to the car with minimal stains on my boots. I turned the ignition on and drove out of the driveway, quickly buckling myself up and eyeing my kids to make sure they're safe. I kept asking Olivia who is sitting in the passenger side with me to check the time and for any messages. I might love the rain, but the traffic makes me have hatred towards it. I safely maneuver upcoming cars and make it with time to spare as I drop off the twins first at their school.
The twins unbuckle themselves and quickly kiss my cheek as a school's helper assists them in getting off the car and leading them to the entrance. I wave a quick goodbye before dashing to Olivia's middle school. "If it continues to rain when school ends make sure to head straight home," I state, making a sharp left turn.
"I have dance practice today, and you know that already. Plus, Michelle and I will be walking together," Olivia replies.
I shake my head. "Only if the rain stops. I'll be out of work early today so I'll be able to take you girls to Alaine's myself."
We reached the school; I pecked her cheek before watching her run to the entrance. I sighed heavily, taking a moment to gather myself. I glanced at my phone, noticing that there was a message from my colleague, Alexa.
"Grab a dozen donuts..." I read, and I wanted to punch her in the face.
Taking a deep breath, I drove off to my favorite café to get one dozen donuts for the damn meeting. Just great.
---
I am cutting it close. I have about twelve minutes to get to the meeting on time and seeing this line is making me want to vomit out my nerves. The good thing about today is that it seems there are two baristas attending the customers rather than the usual one.
As the line moved so did the time and I was running out of it. I almost wanted to ask the person in front of me if I could cut ahead but I'm not that desperate. So I stood in line and waited my turn. I quickly read the menu board and decided to go with a cappuccino to suit with the cold weather. I deserved a treat, I wasn't able to brew my own coffee plus the dried mud on my cute boots deserve it too.
As I prepared my order, I noticed how flustered this new barista was and that had me thinking. "Morning. I'd like a dozen donuts and a large cappuccino to go," I ordered.
Her eyes stopped, eyeing me before continuing to scribble down on the notepad. She has a nice shade of blue eyes; I like that. "Good Morning. Will that be all?" She asked shyly.
With a hum I nodded my head. "It comes down to thirteen eighty-seven. Please follow Natalie and she'll give you your donuts." She motioned over to Natalie who was smiling at me. I handed the new girl my credit card, she hands it over and I make my way to grab the donuts.
Natalie as always had an amazing touch with customers. Although I was just picking out donuts, she made me feel appreciated and that sounds so stupid in my head. But when a very nice girl smiles at you and laughs at your pain of being late, it makes it feel way better. Plus, she sneaked in an extra chocolate donut in before handing me my box. "Hailey will prepare you your cappuccino," she said with a smile.
"When did you guys hire her?" I asked, looking over to Hailey playing around with the coffee machine.
"About two weeks ago. She's a slow learner, but I know she'll get better," she replied. Natalie opened her mouth to say something else but seeing Hailey struggle won her over.
I overlooked the counter of treats, only to see Hailey biting her nails as Natalie quickly stopped the coffee machine. She seemed exasperated with Hailey but did not say otherwise. Thankfully my cappuccino was done, and I went up to the counter to enjoy my drink.
"Here you go and have a nice day," Hailey muttered as she closed the cup with a plastic top. She handed me the drink and I as I grabbed a few napkins from the dispenser next to the register.
"Thank you—" I slowly mumbled but was cut off.
As I reached for the cup, Hailey yelped in pain as the top popped off and the drops of steamed milk burning her hand, and letting go of the cup in the process.
The top fell off completely as the cup splattered onto the tiled floor. The cappuccino splashed onto my boots and the ankles of my dress pants, the stain and smell of espresso now tainted on me. "Are you serious?" I hissed, quickly dabbing the napkins on my pants to minimize the stain.
"I am so sorry. Please, forgive me—"
I cut her off. "Can you shut up?" I glared at her; she had a frightened look on her face. This Hailey girl seemed genuinely sorry, but I am too aggravated accept her apology. "If I'm late to my meeting because of this incident I will personally send you my dry-cleaning bill."
With one last glare, I grab more napkins and turn to walk out into the soft rain with the box of donuts in my arms. What an eventful morning. Just what I asked for, to be soaked with coffee. I'm just hoping I can still make it to the meeting on time.
