Prologue*

Nearing his front steps I couldn’t help the smile on my face it had been way to long since I last saw him. I missed him dearly, every time I slept I would see his smile, his green eyes that held brown and blue sparks, and his dark brown hair when it was at its wildest. I know I sound like a girl in love but its the love of a best friend, I’ve been gone for four years and I missed my teddy bear. Ok so he’s not a teddy bear but he acted like it most of the time. Now that I’m back home for the summer and finishing my last year of college here in my hometown I can’t wait to reconnect with my best friend.

We both made a promise to continue our last year of college together and I kept my promise. I left good friends back at the last college but we are still going to keep contact. I’ve only ever had two relationships and fallen in love once, but like all first loves it doesn’t last my second relationship was more of a rebound so it was less serious. I just hope I don’t have to deal with boys here and that’s where he comes in as well. Hopefully he can send the boys off like in high school, yeah he never let guys around me but I know he was acting like my older brother. Technically he’s only older by two months. I have a younger brother who’s 17 and a sister who’s 13. I came straight here instead of home to see if we can catch up.

Noticing I stopped walking I hurried to get this over and done with. Ringing his doorbell I waited for him to come. We had kept contact the first two years but then lost it after our lives got busier. I heard footsteps coming towards the door and I could feel knots in my stomach from the nerves of seeing him. The door opened and their he stood I felt frozen to my spot his hair was messy, he was shirtless showing off a defined chest and six pack, he had jeans on but the button was undone and he was barefoot. Bad timing I guess and I felt a pang in my heart just thinking of him doing that but I had no reason to be feeling this.

“Nolan babe who is it?” I heard a high pitch voice ask not far away from the door. This seemed to snap Nolan out of his frozen state as well. He cleared his throat and turned inside to answer her.

“Just go back to bed I’ll be up in a few minutes.” His voice deep and low. I heard an ‘ok’ and then footsteps fading away. Nolan then turned to me and closed his door stepping out. “What are you doing here?” His voice was harsh. Wow that really hit the spot. Note the sarcasm.

“I came to see you, I just came back and thought we should catch up.” I said quieter than I thought I would.

“Listen Chanel as you can see I’m pretty busy so umm I think you should leave.” He said softer. I looked down at the ground as I felt my eyes water. He changed, he’s no longer the guy I knew, and well I guess I’ll show him the cover up I give to everyone else. Leaving was the hardest thing I had to do because I knew I was going to be far away from him, that is why I never let anyone get close to me. Yes I had friends but they were never close. I breathed in deep then looked up.

“I guess I should but just so you know Nolan I came here to keep my side of the promise. If you don’t remember I’ll remind you, I was to come here, talk with you and catch up with you. I haven’t even gone home yet. Hell if I knew you would react this way I wouldn’t have come. I guess I’ll see you around.” I said in a bitchy tone but it cracked at the end. I turned before he could reply and made my way towards my car.

“Chanel wait.” His voice was soft and filled with pain.

“No Nolan you made it pretty clear and I guess this means our college plans have changed too. Don’t worry I won’t get in your way anymore.” My voice was weak because I was holding back my tears and I knew he heard it too. I made my way in my car and closed the door. I started the engine and only then I let the tears spill. I heard knocking on my door and his voice.
