“Hello, this is your captain speaking. Please turn off any electronic devices. We will be landing in London, England in just a few minutes. Thank you for flying with American Airlines.” The pilot spoke to the cabin.
I took out my ear buds and looked out the window and smiled. It was about 11:30 pm. ‘It is going to take a while before I get used to this time change.’ I thought to myself.
I turned off my iPhone and put it into my bag, and looked to the elderly woman to my right. She was beginning to put her knitting supplies back into her yarn bag. I remembered how a few hours ago I commended, Margret, that she had amazing skills knitting while the turbulence was getting the best of me and not even seeming to bother her. We began talking about how she didn’t seem phased she had told me, “Dear, I have been flying for about 40 years.”
“Really?” I asked flabbergasted, “Why?”
“My husband lives in London, while I live in New York. We have had a long distance relationship since we met.” She smiled. “I know you are probably thinkin’ how the hell do two people stay together that long of a while livin’ so far away from one another? Well, I will tell you Dear, it wasn’t the easiest relationship in the world. Then again, whose is?” She chuckled leaning in, “We have this little sayin’ that goes, ‘Distance makes the heart grow fonder.’” She said leaning back into her seat and began to knit again.
I saw the twinkle in her eye and I believed they really adored each other. I smiled thinking about how cute that love story really was.
I turned back around to face the window, a long distance relationship for 40 years. ‘That really is something.’ I thought to myself.
I pulled myself out of that memory as I felt the ground beneath the planes wheels.
‘OH MY GOD ROSIE YOU ARE IN LONDON, ENGLAND!!’ I screamed in my head and I had the widest smile ever.
People began to stand and collect their luggage from the top of their compartments. “It was nice talking to you Margret.” I said after getting my luggage from the overhead compartment. “Nice meeting you too Dear.” She smiled. Something told me that her husband would be off in the airport waiting for her.
A middle-aged man with graying hair, a suit and briefcase let me walk in front of him. “Thank you.” I muttered.
I took a deep breath..again walking down the hallway that lead to the airport.
I stepped out of the hallway and walked into the middle of the airport.
I spun around one time taking in my surroundings smiling at the fact I was actually here. I stopped when I saw Margret with an elderly man sharing a warm embrace and I smiled.
There’s all of these people walking around; little kids, men and woman in business suits, workers for the airport, luggage rolling around and it seemed not to bother them one bit.
They were with each other and they looked like they were the only two people in the world in each others embrace.
I walked away and started to look for my suitcase at baggage claim and couldn’t find it.
I was starting to panic after a half hour of waiting. There were people everywhere and what if someone was going to steal my bag. Someone wouldn’t do that would they? They couldn’t of. They couldn’t have done tha—I suddenly stopped panicking when I saw my little red suitcase go around the bend. (A/N lol what? C: )I pushed in between some people which I realize is rude, but I need my bag.
I walked up to it and took it off the conveyer belt and pulled the handle up.
I pulled my phone out of my bag and a little white card I had to call a cab service.
I looked at the time it was 12:45. Ugh. I am so tired.
I punched the cab services number in my phone and waited for an answer after about 3 rings a gruff voice answered the phone. “What’s up?”
“Um, hi.. I need a cab to come pick me up I’m at the London Heathrow Airport.”
“Okay ma’am and where are you heading?”
I swallowed. “Um, Manchester University’s dorm rooms sir.”
It was a long pause before the man spoke again, “Miss, that is a three hour drive.”
Please God be with me. “I will pay extra sir..” I trailed off, ‘I need to change my money from dollars to pounds’ I reminded myself.
The man sighed. “Alright miss, please wait for about 25 minutes we will have a cab there soon.”
I exhaled the breath I didn’t realize I was holding. “Thank you so, so much sir.” I said into the phone. “You’re welcome Miss.” With that the man hung up the phone. I put my phone back into my bag and looked around.
“I need to find a money converter thingy..” I mumbled, thinking out loud.
I grabbed my suitcase by the handle and pulled it behind me.
After about 10 minutes of looking I finally found one of those machines.
I pulled out all of my American money and put it into the machine.
The machine began to spit out all of my money into pounds.
Once the machine was finished I put all of the money back into my bag, then walked out of the front entrance of the airport.
Whoosh a rush of cold air just flew around me and I pulled my blue jacket tighter around me.
My parents were right when they said it was much colder down here. I pulled out my phone and realized that the cab should be here in 5 minutes.
I pushed the handle down on my suitcase and sat down on the top of it.
Soon enough a cab pulled up to me.
“Are you the lady that’s makin’ meh drive three houas outta my way?” Asked the man.
I stood up from my suitcase and smiled weakly.
“I am really, really sorry sir.” I said hoping he’d understand, I’m new here.
“C’mon you’re freezin’ your arse out there.” He said with a chuckle.
He popped open the trunk and I put my suitcase in there. The trunk began to close as I walked away from it and I opened the back door and climbed inside.
Grateful that the man had turned on the heating. “Ma name’s charleh.”
He probably has the most authentic cockney accent I have ever heard in my entire life. Not that I have heard many, it’s just he seems to have the real deal. I presumed he meant his name was Charlie.
“Rose.” I said with a warm smile.
“You have a very interesting accent.” I said, telling him my observation.
“As do yah.” He said looking into the rearview mirror.
“So have you lived here your whole life?” I questioned.
He smiled inhaling a deep breath.
Indicating that this would be a long story.
“Lemmeh tell yah on the way there.” He said pulling out of the airports parking lot.
**YUPPP!!! She’s on her wayyy to the dorms! WOOOO HOOOO!!! So gimmie feedback yeh? Haha, daily updates ladies and fries. Xx**
