CHAPTER 1

Sofy

~14 years later~

Once upon again, still in the far away fairytale land,

“Hey elephant ears! I bet you’re so fat you can’t get out of that tree!”

I didn’t respond, I've heard this all before. Keep on reading Sofy, you've got this.

“Gee, I guess her lips must be so fat too, for she can’t even talk!” a lighter voice said.

I’m not going to listen, nope, not listening you jerks.

 “Nay-she’s probably too dumb!”

Oohhh…they are so going to get it.

“Yeah! She doesn’t even know what talking is!” Laughing echoes throughout the trees.

That does it. I reach down and grab the wet joy out of the bucket at my feet. Without even looking I pitch the water balloon out of my window from my window seat. Direct hit. Setting down my book, I grab 2 more. Dropping them on the remaining meanie butts, making sure their all soaking wet and running, I go back to my book glad for peace and quiet. Soon enough I then hear Emily from the kitchen.

“Sofy was that screams I heard?” Emily said more as a statement then a question.

“Yes…” I mumbled as she came in. Emily wasn’t my mom, or sister for that matter (She’s 20, while I’m 14. 6 years apart!). Offically she is dubt as my caretaker, but I still consider her as family and we pretty much are since her mom raised me as my nanny and Emily played with me and took over the job when Sarra had to quit, to take care of Emily’s old uncle and her brother.

“Sofy, must I tell you again? You must not do that! People don’t generally like water balloons thrown at them.”

“Those people don’t like big ears ether, which make some people not like them.” I say, the statement taking me back to a memory, years ago.

                                                         ~

I was 5 and didn’t really fully understand that living in a tree house and having big ears was not normal because one day, some kids were passing by and I stuck my head out of the window. I called to them but they gazed, shocked at me and ran away, small ears and all. I cried until I ran out of tears in Sarra’s arms that day.

                                                             ~

“I know it’s so unfair.” The present Emily says, “But still. It’s rude…do you want anything at the market? We have pretty much nothing to eat!”

“Yes! Charcoal pencils for drawing, a new dress? Mine's getting to short. Also... well…I don’t know. What else do we need?” I told Emily.

“Well I’m getting some food and such so I will be back soon and remember-no water balloons!” then Emily gathered her bags and climbed down the rope ladder. I wistfully watched her go. Emily was a good nanny, but felt more like a friend. Also, I would love to just be able to climb down that ladder like she could. To touch the lush grass, feel the cold rocks on my bare feet, oh how I wish I could to that...

My confinement was SO unfair! Locked up for having big ears. I glanced at the wall and saw the official document refining me on parchment paper. It reads in ink with fancy script making things all too true:
