Coloured

I didn't know grey

Until it was there.

I didn't know sadness

Until it saturated the air.

My world was coloured,

So vivid and bright;

A friend filled the space

With beauty and light.

That friend was you.

But then I started getting selfish,

Ungrateful, unkind.

I never paused to appreciate

How much was mine.

You tried to stop it,

So my world could stay coloured,

But I always ignored

Your voice saying no.

No to my anger,

No to my madness,

No to unkindness,

And eventually,

No to a friend

Who didn't appreciate you.

Only now do I realise

How rare a friend is.

I know now how hard

Finding one is.

A friend who will know me

Better than I do,

A friend who will answer

My questions like you.

A friend who is good,

A friend who is kind,

A friend who brings colour

To this grey world of mine.

You knew about grey,

For I made your world that.

I'm sorry I did it,

But I can't take it back.

Now my world is bleak;

Every hour is night,

But now yours is coloured,

Vivid and bright,

For someone has finally

Filled it with light.

It isn't me.

I know that you're happy,

I know that you're glad.

I'm sure, unlike me,

You're not shattered and sad.

But somewhere inside me

I can see the good times,

When I coloured your world

And you coloured mine.

I remember those things,

The laughing and smiling,

And I know that, one day,

I'll see you again.

I'll tell you what's happened

Since my world went grey,

And then the grey will be gone

For you leach the grey

Out of my world.

I didn't know grey

Until it was too late.

I will never have a best friend

Unless you come again.
