Red blood
Wolf yanked his head up, his hand going to his mouth to feel for the warm stickiness of blood but found nothing more than sweat. Unconvinced of his own innocence, he looked to his side and found Scarlet still curled up. Her red nightgown was soaked with sweat but she looked peaceful as ever. The nightmares had gotten worse and worse since Cinder had commed the knowledge he dreaded so terribly. His hand stumbled over the bed side table and he found his port screen. The harsh light of the screen burned his eyes and made him squint at it, selecting the comm and opening it to reread.Wolf, I found one of the scientists who worked on the lupine soldiers. It took a while to get it out of her but she said that certain triggers will set off any of the lupine soldiers without warning. Stay careful.
He shook his head, the terror of his dream fading and leaving him feeling drained instead. Burrowing into the feather pillow, he surrendered to sleep. But a nagging worry kept him awake for who knows how long. Tingles traced down his spine. Scarlet's occasional squirming. A light flashed behind his eyelids and then the darkness of sleep fell on him.
Two days passed but Wolf was unable to shake this feeling of dread, a weight on his shoulders holding him down. If Scarlet wasn't there to wake him as soon as day break came, he'd probably have spent weeks in bed. After three days without incident, he was beginning to calm. But in the night, his dreams turned gruesome again.
The room was empty when he awoke. Scarlet must have gone to get her shower without telling him. He forced the unexpected frustration down his throat and stood, still groggy. Dragging his hands through his hair, Wolf tried to wake himself up. Scarlet appeared in the doorway, her red hair burgundy from being soaked, though she was already dressed.
"Ah, you're up. Get ready" she nodded to him.
"And good morning to you to" his voice came out a growl, his green eyes narrowing as he watched her leave. Turning to the closet, he fished out a flannel shirt and jeans, getting dressed quickly before dashing out. The sun was already climbing into the sky, making Wolf cringe. If it was so late, why hadn't Scarlet woken him? She was so dense sometimes.
Wolf went into the kitchen, frustrated when he couldn't smell any food ready. His lips curled into a small snarl.
"Sorry" the ginger shrugged, "We can have breakfast after we work."
His fingers itched with endless energy, frustration fueling him. Not that she noticed. She never paid attention to him. He shook out his hair, trying to scatter the malicious thoughts but they seemed to run like fire in his blood. Scarlet threw open the barn door and walked in, Wolf padding in silently behind her. She was talking. Most likely to him. Most likely making fun of him.
His stomach growled and he swiped his tongue over his fangs. Scarlet looked at him and he saw the warmth drain from her face. He could hear blood pounding through her veins. Tantalizing
Suddenly, he sprung at her, not truly thinking about what he was doing. He was an animal. She was prey.
Scarlet didn't even reach for her gun, letting him shove her down. A scream ripped through her throat as his teeth pierced the flesh on her neck. Snarling, he ripped at the skin, pulling a chunk into his mouth and staring down at her with her blood running down his jaw. The look of terror in her eyes hurt more than he'd thought possible. Suddenly, the warm blood lost its appeal and tasted like acid on his tongue. Wolf slunk backwards, his eyes wide and innocent like those of a child as his fingers tips brushed over his blood-soaked facial hair. His back curled and he braced his hands on the dirt and retched hard, his entire body shaking with each burning spill of blood from his lips. For a moment, he thought it was own but knew better than that. It tasted like Scarlet. Scarlet had pushed herself as far away from him as she could, her palms pressed against the barn wall. Silently, she watched him heave and shake. She wanted to scream or shoot him but shouldn't make herself. Instead she watched in shocked silence as he howled like a shot animals and clawed at his hair.
