Bang! Leeroy woke up to a gun shot in his very living room. He ran downstairs, quickly, making sure everyone was alright. He reached the bottom step, and saw his brother Lucian aiming a gun at him mother, who was bawling. She had a gun shot wound in her left shoulder.

Leeroy ran over to his mother, and shouted, “Lucian! What are you doing??” Their mother collapsed, unconscious, on the ground.

Leeroy was a small, ten year old boy, with red bright red hair and blue eyes. His brother, Lucian, was also very small. He was fifteen, with dark brown hair. He shared Leeroy’s blue eyes, though. He glared at his brother.

“Haven’t you heard, Leeroy? The world’s ending! We need to stock up on food, and our dumb-ass mother won’t buy any!” He looked seriously angry. His eyes had an eerie glow to them.

Leeroy started to wrap their mother’s shoulder with his own shirt, but Lucian aimed the gun at his head. “Don’t save her, she’s just gonna get in the way!”

Tears started rolling down Leeroy’s cheeks. “She’s our mom! We have to save her!” He hugged their mom, and Lucian aimed the gun again.

“Don’t even think about it! You’re an idiot boy, you don’t know what you’re doing!” Leeroy finally understood the glow in Lucian’s eyes. It wasn’t anger, or sadness, or excitement. It was fear. Leeroy ran up to his brother and hugged him.

“It’s OK to be scared. Our world’s gonna end. Everything we know today will vanish. But you know what? We’re good kids. We’ll go to heaven. As long as you let me save Mom. OK?” Lucian hesitated, then he nodded.

Leeroy walked back over to his mother and started wrapping her shoulder again. “Lucian, can you get me some water?” He nodded and walked to the kitchen.

Leeroy looked into his mother’s eyes. She didn’t look as young as she did five years ago. She used to be beautiful. Their dad said she was the most perfect girl a man to ask for. She had flowing, golden hair, and her bright blue eyes would glow in the sunlight. She faced a dramatic change after her husband died. They were planning on having another kid, hopefully a girl, when he died in a car accident. Now, their mother, Lucy, had gray/blonde hair, and the light in her eyes seemed to have faded. The perfect smile that used to always be on her face was gone. She looked much older then she did when she was 29. Now she’s 34.

Or, she would be.

Lucian walked back into the living room with a glass of water. It looked foggy for some reason, but Leeroy took it. “Thank you. I’m sure you’ll go to heaven now.” He smiled and put some of the water on his mother’s shoulder, then put it up to his lips. He stopped, as if a TV remote pressed pause, then set it down. “What’s in this? What’d you put in it?” He looked into Lucian’s eyes and says they were watery. “You poisoned this!”

Leeroy stood up, eyes wide. He looked at his mother. He wanted to stay, to protect her, but the poison would be moving through her body already. He backed away slowly, crying. “You’ll never go to heaven, Lucian, you’re gonna go to Hell! You could take over for the Devil!” He looked at his mother’s aged face. Then he looked into Lucian’s, who was looking at his feet. Leeroy shook his head angrily, and he ran out the door.

And that was the last time he’ll ever see his brother.
