A small girl of only 11 slowly trudged through the dirt. Her name was Lena and she was hot on his trail. She had been following Theseus for the past few nights in hope of finding a better home in Athens. SHe had left her mother small and frail in order to find a better life, she always said she would go back for her but didn't know if she could. She followed him all the way to Athens and only then did she learn of the curse. Every year 14 children would go as a sacrifice to the minotaur, upon hearing this she was horrified at how bad everyone had it. She knew that her mother could never come here, but she could not bear to go back.
Months passed with no word to her mother, she sent not even a letter. She trembled at the thought of her hopes getting high, but what would her mother do if she never came back? She pondered upon this question day and night. Then a thought struck her, she would sneak into King Agamemnon's chamber in the middle of the night to have a small chat with him.
That night she snuck into the king's castle only to get lost in the massive structure, so one by one she opened each door and look in, but instead of finding the king she found Theseus he was sleeping, but she quickly awoke him. He sat up in one quick motion he grabbed his sword and aimed. She jumped back as fast as she could and he stood still, as if to measure his options. He then lowered his sword and finally spoke. "What are you doing here in my chamber?" His voice was quiet almost as low as a mouse.
"I came to speak to the king, but seemed to have gotten lost in the castle," Lena said with a soft voice." I can not even find my way out, much less avoid the guards."
"Well then we have to fix that won't we," he asked but all she could do was nod. " Come on I can not take you to the king, but I can help you get out of here."
" Ok, but I have one question, how many days until the black sailed ship comes?" She said so softly he could barely here as he lifted his fine covers and started out the door.
" Ten days," he said in a low,but sorrowed voice. He looked over at her beside him and slowly said. "You want to go don't you, to save us from it." He was right she did want to go and save them, but she was doubtful it would work.
" Yes, in Ten days I will go to the pier dressed in white as the black sail ship comes," She answered In a small, but defiant voice. "I will slay the beast, die, or be the first to live." They walked the rest of the way to the gate in silence, as the approached the gate he said goodbye and she walked back out into the moonlight.
Ten days came and went, she spent her time thinking and preparing her garments. She quickly threw on her white gown and hat. Then she ran as fast as she could to the dock and got in line. She was the first volunteer, everyone stared at her with great sadness in their eyes. She stood and waited for the black sailed ship, slowly others joined her. When the ship arrived it had food and water. She boarded the ship in a hurry and as everyone was on the ship the set sail. They traveled for a day or two.
Upon arriving they were sent in to a great feasting hall. Many ate all they could, but those who knew did not. She snuck food into her dress pockets and ate all she could. The feast consisted of Ham and other great meats and delicacies. She was then taken to the chamber, it was a room full of sweet treats and the best furniture, Everyone settle down, but no one spoke or slept. Now that everyone knew what was coming there would be screaming through the night.
As the sun rose they all sat up, they knew these were their final hours. They were dressed in flowers and a whiter cloth. Then they were sent to the big doors of gold, one by one they all went through, the next would go when there was a scream. They all were gone but Lena, she was the last to go into the maze. She made her way through quietly until she found a small gap in the stone. It was deep enough and then spread out inside. She could hear the Minotaur getting closer and closer every second so she hurried into the cave. She heard a great roar and then the cave trembled. She knew it was out there, but she also knew that they would come for her if they thought she was still alive. She made a quick decision and gave a bloodcurdling scream.
Eventually the MInotaur gave up and went away, She stayed there in the cave for 6 years every day a beautiful Princess would bring down food for her and help her stay alive, but every six years when the MInotaur demanded 14 children she would call out from her cave. "Come this way it is safe here." Sometimes they would find her and if they did she gave out a blood curling scream, but she could only save one child every year. This went on and on until one day she went out of the maze to find the Minotaur dead and a boy standing over the body. She quickly ran and fetched the children and they ran away. No one knows what happened to them only that they are safe and far away.
