Natalie invited me to stay another night. so here I am, sitting on her kitchen counter while she's upstairs fucking some guy. in this moment I'm just really glad I can't hear.
I throw the core of my apple into the trash when Ramona appears through the door way with three trash bags behind her.
"where's Natalie?" she signed. she had a frantic look on her face. like she was scared and sad.
"upstairs with some guy," I told her.
she left the trash bags behind her and stepped into the kitchen. "I'm so fucked," she signed and covered her face with her hands.
I touched her shoulder to get her attention. she looked up at me but kept her hands close to her chest.
"what happened?" I questioned.
"I told my family that I'm gay. and they kicked me out," she explained.
"oh." was all I could come out with. "I'm so sorry. my parents didn't take it well either but they didn't kick me out. I couldn't imagine," I said. I couldnt really tell if I was being helpful at all. "you look like you could use a cigarette," I motioned her to come outside with me.
we both sat there, we didn't talk or anything. we just smoked and it was comfortable. it was easy. I didn't think about her being hearing or the fact that she has a girlfriend. she was just Ramona. a girl I had just met who had a lot more issues than she could handle.
I felt a hand on my shoulder and I looked up. Natalie put a hand on both of our shoulders and then sat between us.
Ramona told Natalie all that's happened. and Natalie told her that she's welcome to stay in the guest room for as long as she needed. her parents would be back tomorrow and they would tell her the same thing.
Ramona was stone faced. like she had no emotion. her face was clear, but so strong. I think this girl could handle anything.
Natalie stood up from the bench and looked at us both. "I think its just us tonight. so I say, we get drunk and have some fun. I have a bottle of rum and half a bottle of tequila in my room. Ramona already cleaned the house so we don't have that to worry about. sound good?" she looked back and forth from me to Ramona with her eye brows raise untill she got a nod from me and hell yeah from Ramona.
-
Our drinking started around 6 and I don't think it stopped.
"let's start off with the easiest drinking game," Natalie said. "never have I ever " her smile got so big as she laughed at her game.
We agreed we would start off with never have I ever.
"you go first!" Ramona pointed at Natalie.
"never have I ever done heroine," she looked at us.
I lifted my shot glass and downed it.
"What!!??" Ramona looked so confused.
"I used to live in a bad neighborhood and I used to make bad choices," I shrugged. its not like I do it anymore.
she shook her head at me. "damn" she signed.
"never have I ever fucked and ducked," Ramona signed with a smirk on her face.
we all downed another shot.
I put my shot glass in front of me and looked up and we all just laughed.
"you guys are horrible!" Natalie signed.
"you had sex this afternoon!" Ramona pushed her arm.
"And im about to invite him back over again!" Natalie laughed
it was amazing to watch Ramona. she doesn't even seem hearing to me. the only time I saw her talk was when she didn't know I was deaf. she's respectable. and she signs and understands it all as if she were deaf.
"I'm so done with this game," Ramona shook her head and downed another shot.
Natalie was on her phone and I think she really was inviting that guy back over.
Ramona lifted up the bottle and furrowed her eyebrows at me. "dare me to chug it?"
"no, that's dumb. you drink on moderation so you don't get sick," I told her, playing with the empty shot glass.
"don't be such a downer." she pouted
"he's coming! again! second time in a day!" Natalie cut in.
"you better go clean yourself up! don't want to be smelly," Ramona nudged her.
"you're so rude! but I think I will," Natalie signed with a develish smirk.
then, she ran out of the room.Ramona took my shot glass out of my hand and filled it up and her own.
she cheered me and then we gulped it down all at once.
she slammed down her shoot glass and layed down.
I was sitting up next to her and all I saw were her lips moving. she wasn't signing anymore. she was ranting. I could tell she was angry. I was angry she wasn't signing at first but it wasn't personal. she is hearing. she talks and sings and understands language.
"hey," I waved at her. "deaf. remember?" I signed.
she nodded. "I know I'm sorry, when I spend a lot of time with Natalie I feel like screaming because I don't talk," she shrugs. "sorry" she says again.
"its okay. I understand," I assured her.
"I know how rude it is to actually speak because I know you can't hear me," she went on
"you should stop while youre ahead. you're too drunk to talk," I told her.
she moved her head into my lap. her crazy curly hair stuck out in places but it was cute. I moved a couple curls out of her face and I felt her sigh heavily.
we stayed like that for a while. Natalie disappeared upstairs with the same guy from this morning.
suddenly, Ramona shot up. "I'm so tired of putting up with shit. I just want to move out and support myself," she said desperately.
"you're smart, you can do it. I know it," I tried to tell her but she was too upset. I could see tears forming in her eyes.
"my parents just threw me out, without a second thought. their daughter," she shook her head and the tears started failing. "I'm sitting here with this amazing beautiful girl. who I just want to kiss which is horrible because my best friend is upstairs and I have a girlfriend who I love completely and I'm crying and this is bad," she continues.
I looked at her closely. kiss me ? she wants to kiss me ?
nothing really seemed to matter as much after that. I looked right into her brown eyes and put my hand on her cheek. slowly i pulled her in, making sure she knew she could pull away at any moment.
she never did. I pulled her into a kiss. to my surprise, she kissed me back.
As the kiss got deeper and deeper, everything seemed to wash away. I kissed her. she kissed me. that was it. nothing else seemed to exist.
what kind of girl is she ? she turned off my brain and made me go numb to everything but her.
she's gonna be the death of me I can already tell.
the rest of the night we laid in the middle of the living room floor together. drunk and unimportant and that was okay.
