I woke up late on Thursday morning. I knew that I had to hurry to get to school on time. I went to get out of bed when I fell over. It was then that I realised that I couldn't feel my legs. I could hear Mr and Mrs Lee coming so I tried not to panic.
"What happened Charlie? Did you fall out of bed?" I could see that Mrs Lee was confused. I tried not to freak out as I spoke.
"I can't feel my legs." For a minute nothing happened but then they both rushed into action.
"Bert, get the car round the front and call the hospital to let them know we are coming."
"Make sure you get extra clothes for her?"
"Hurry!" I was gently picked up by Mrs Lee who gave me a bag of clothes to hold. I was placed in the car and we drove to the hospital a few blocks away. I was rushed into a room, poked and prodded by doctors and then taken to another room. I spent the rest of the day there with the Lee's. I wondered what Jasmine was doing. Then I heard a soft knock on the door and her voice asking for me. She walked in and I felt a small bit of happiness, until I remembered why I was here. She walked over and looked at me. So I told her.
"Jasmine. I can't feel my legs." She quickly moved to the side of the bed and grabbed my hand. I gripped onto her hand as tears formed in her eyes.
"Why?" Her voice cracked a little.
"We don't know, the doctors are going to tell us when they know something." Mrs Lee told her.
"Can I stay for a little bit?" I have never heard Jasmine unsure of herself. Mrs Lee nodded. Jasmine quickly went to call her mum before coming back to her original spot. Then three doctors entered the room.
"Alexia and Burt, can we talk to you outside please?" They left and Jasmine turned to me.
"I didn't know your foster mums name was Alexia. That's a pretty name." I nodded.
"I might start calling them Alexia and Burt." I said thoughtfully. The door opened again and Mr Lee was supporting Mrs Lee and the doctors were sad faced.
"Charlie, we think you have a disease called polio." Jasmine cried out. The doctor looked at her before continuing.
"It's a disease that paralyses your muscles. It isn't curable but sometimes it goes away, and other times it doesn't." I looked over at Jasmine, she was crying silently, that made me scared. The doctors left, saying that they'd be back in the morning and to call them if anything changed.
"What's wrong Jasmine?" I moved my hand to her shoulder. She took a deep breath before speaking.
"When I was six, my mum had another baby. A beautiful little girl. I loved her very much. As she grew older we evanescence closer. Just after she turned four she got polio," Jasmine paused to get her breath, "It spread quickly, stating in her legs and ending in her head. She died two years ago." Jasmine completely broke down. I struggled to sit up, Mrs Lee, Alexia, helped me. When I was up I reached out to Jasmine, I hugged her tight.
"I'll be fine, you heard the doctor, sometimes it goes away." I tried to reassure her, even though I was terrified. She started calming down. I lay back down, wiping away tears. Alexia reached over and hugged Jasmine as well.
Later that night, I woke up. Jasmine was on a chair leaning on my bed, Alexia was in a recliner and Burt was on the floor with a thin mattress and a pillow. I realised how much all of them loved me to speed the night sleeping like this.
When I woke up the next morning, I tried to move my left arm, it wouldn't move, I had to lift it with my other arm. But when I touched it, I couldn't feel the touch. I even tried pinching my arm, but I couldn't feel anything.
"Alexia, wake up." I whispered. I felt bad for waking her up but she needed to know. She looked a bit surprised at me calling her Alexia, but didn't say anything.
"I can't feel my left arm."Hey guys, I don't know much about polio, so if I have anything wrong then feel free to correct me. Hope your enjoying this. I also realises that I'm not writing in an olden day style, sorry, but it's hard.
