Chapter 4

Darkness.

That's all I saw. That's all I felt.

I didn't dream. I didn't think.

Darkness.

Then came the light. Slowly, I blinked.

Once. And then twice.

And everything came rushing back to me. Laying in bed, getting attacked, going to the hospital, my new friend taking me home and then...

The package.

I almost freaked out again, shivering, starting to scream, but in an instant his arms were around me. Quietly he whispered kind words of comfort to ease me back down into bed. I stopped shivering. I didn't scream. But I sure as hell was still scared out of my mind. I didn't want it to be true. I didn't want to be one of them.  I heard stories but I didn't think they were real.

Well then.

Guess they are.

I wrap my arms around him. Tears start flowing down my face as I started to cry. I hug him tighter as I wish this is all just a stupid dream or prank.

He flipped the page.

He came and visited me every day. He made sure I was okay and I didn't need anything. I was still recovering. Not from the transplant but from the shock of suddenly being thrown into another world. And he seemed to sense that. He understood how lost I was.

He comforted me.

He let me cry and he listened.

It seemed as if all my other friends seemed to forget me. He was the only one who came to see me. He was the only one who cared.

He told me stories.

He told me of the time he spent with his best friend. He told me about his mom who always seemed to care for someone else. About how she put so much effort into helping someone else.

And it was the effort that killed her.

He told me about his life and how he got into college. He told me about going to a cafe called Anteiku every day to see a girl named Rize.

He told me about how he asked her out.

And how she attacked him, like he attacked me.

He told me about the time he was turned into one of them.

He told me about how he was targeted and eventually kidnapped by Aogiri.

And then he told me about Yamori.

He told me about how he was tortured.

Fingers, toes. Counting down from 1000 by seven.

He gave me every last detail. Every last number.

I was still swallowed in self-guilt, but now I understood how he could comfort me so easily.

Because he had been here before.

I flipped the page.
