"Why are you so sad, Harry?" Amelia was looking at him with sad eyes and a pronounced pout. She didn't like it when he was upset in anyway and always tried to fix it. He really liked the part of Rosalie that was Amelia because Amelia was so much like Rosalie when they were both younger.
Harry sighed and forced his lips up into a weak smile, "I'm worried about Jane. She doesn't want to see me anymore and she's not acting like herself. Do any of you know anything that I don't? Things were going so well..."
Amelia fiddled with her fingers and dropped her eyes, "They say she's on the list."
Harry's eyebrows pulled together. He hadn't heard anything about a list, but it didn't sound good.
"What list?"
Rosalie's eyes rolled and now Victoria had taken over, "'What list?' The lobotomy list you dumb ass! What other list is there?"
Everything stopped. Harry forgot how to breathe and his heart sank quicker than a ship's anchor, "No...that...she was getting better...they can't..."
Victoria scoffed and crossed her arms, "They can do whatever they want. They don't care about any of us. We're the freaks of society. She wasn't smart enough to keep in check and she made the list, it's as simple as that. They want to put us on the list, but we behave and keep quiet so that they don't."
Harry pulled at his hair and looked around the room for Jane, his eyes darting much like hers did. He found her at her usual table, her eyes looking anywhere but at him. Jane knew that he was there, but looking directly at him made her want to cry even more. She had to keep her distance in order to cushion the blow.
Harry noticed the change in her demeanor, she was still cautious of everyone around her, but her expression was sadder than it was panicked.
"I'm going to go talk to her."
Victoria rolled her eyes again. She thought that Harry was stupid when he acted like that, actually, she thought that he was stupid in general.
"Don't come crying back to us when she hurts your feelings."
Harry ignored Victoria, stood, and made his way across the room with long and determined strides. Jane could try to shut him out and push him away all she wanted, but he wasn't going to give up so easily. He made her a promise years ago that he wasn't able to keep and he would be damned if he didn't keep it now.
The familiar guards eyed him but made no move to send him away because Jane simply hadn't reacted. Jane was shrinking inside herself and trying to will everything away, trying to ignore the way that this man made her feel and how much it hurt to have to push him away.
Everyone knew what could happen if you were on the list. She didn't want him to still be hers and miss out on all of the things another, sane, woman could give him. He was too special for that and he always had been. His heart of gold was something that she just couldn't tarnish, no matter how much she wanted to have it for herself.
"Jane."
Jane didn't look at him, her dark eyes focused on her hands and the table beneath them. He knew that a thousand things were going on in her mind, but he also knew that she had heard him and some part of her was choosing to ignore him.
Despite the fact that he had told her he wouldn't make an effort to touch her again, (1) because it wasn't allowed and (2) because it had upset her, he reached for her hand. Harry's large hand completely engulfed Jane's small one, but this time she didn't flinch.
"Talk to me Jane. You don't have to do this alone."
Jane's hands begun to tremble and she closed her eyes as tightly as she could manage. There were so many voices telling her to pull away, to hit him, to yell at him, anything but trust him and let him in. They said that he was dangerous and that it was his fault this was happening to her. He'd planned it all and was just putting on a show just for the fun of it.
She didn't want to believe it because she knew that it wasn't true, but she was going to let herself believe the voices because it made it easier to push him and his pretty green eyes and his golden heart away.
"Go away, Harry."
Harry released her hand and leaned back slightly only to slump in his seat and mumble, "I don't understand...why don't you want me to be there for you?"
A single tear slid down Jane's cheek. She stood up without a word and told Damien that she wanted to go back to her room.
Harry tried to get to her, but a few other guards had been watching his exchange with Jane and they caught him in tight vices before he could get very far.
"I promised you! Don't do this Jane! Please...I love you."
Author's Note:
This chapter was a bit short for quite a few reasons. I left out the flashback at the beginning because that's where the memories of Jane ended for Harry since she was taken out of his life. Other than that, the chapter was short because their exchange is meant to be short and dramatic and the next chapter will be considerably longer because it will be the final chapter. Thank you to everyone that has read/voted/commented so far, I'd love to know your thoughts as this is coming to an end shortly. What do you think will happen?
