~Destrey’s POV~
It’s been a week and a half since Steele found me in the guard room crying, and he hasn’t done so much as talked to me once, not even given me a glance since he left that room. He also took the letter with him; I don’t have the slightest idea as to why he did though. Delia was so angry I skipped class but when I had told her what had happened she was a bit more sympathetic, but she seems to be like a body guard making sure I get to class and stay there. School was over and I was walking to practice, when Morgan pops out of nowhere tripping me as if he didn’t see me, I fall to the ground on my side. I see Steele at the front of the school giving me a sympathetic look, I look into his eyes but my attention is pulled away when a Morgan’s foot hits my stomach.
I curl up in pain, he says harshly. ”Watch where you’re going, freak.” I don’t know why he calls me the freak; I had more friends than he did, I was nicer, more normal. His only friends were the druggies and his twin sister who he gets into fights with all the time. Good thing they didn’t live together, Morgan lived with his mom, while Madge lives with her father. Madge wasn’t very popular either, she wasn’t very nice.
I hadn’t realized until I looked up that Steele was in front of me with that same sympathetic stare, holding out his hand for me to grab, he seems to be here every time I fall. I notice Morgan had walked away, and I took his hand. Damn, so soft. He let go and I tried to thank him but nothing came out.
“Are you alright Des?” I was taking aback by hearing him call me Des. Only Delia had ever called me Des. I nod.
“Where did you hear that? Only Delia calls me Des.” He shrugs and smiles. My phone’s alarm went off playing Trouble by Never Shout Never, telling me I have only five minutes before practice.
“I’ve got to go Steele, bye thanks for helping me up, Twice.” I laugh rather confidently, surprising confidence, and run to get changed and eat a snack before practice. While at practice, I was in the zone, practicing at my best until we have a water break, I went to get water and saw Morgan and Madge talking to some shady guys. Morgan seemed angry at Madge; she was crying, badly, the other guys seemed to be just watching occasionally looking around, they didn’t look very happy either, or friendly. She looked dreadful; the scars on her arms apparent, her tears soaked her face, She looked at me with pleading eyes. I rush over without thinking.
“Madge, are you okay?” I wrap my arms around her, she doesn’t fight me just stand there crying into my chest. The shady men all glare at me, I ignore them and direct my attention to Morgan. He’s now fuming with anger.
“Everything’s fine, now leave!” He yells at me stepping closer in a threatening manner. I stand my ground.
“No. Everything is not ok, Morgan. She needs help, she’s crying and she needs help. You’re her twin, are you going to help her Morgan?” I stare at him expectantly. He seems to get angry for a moment then turn to them shady characters.
“Leave” He says with venom in just the single word, the men all hurry away, he turns to me trying to keep a stern face but failing when he holds Madge in his arms, it was hard to hear but I made out the words. “I’m sorry” I slowly walk away looking back one last time to see a worried brother comforting a damaged girl who’s looking back at me through her tears. I turn the corner and they’re out of my site.
As I’m walking back to where I practice I see hear music and walk towards the band room. I see Steele playing the violin beautifully, there are other people listening to what he’s playing, I try to be as quiet as possible, but trip on the edge of the door, hitting the hard floor. He quickly rushes to me and outstretches his hand.
“Are you okay? You need to stop falling so much.” I look up at him, blushing deeply; I grab his hand and he pulls me up. As soon as he releases my hand I quickly bolt out of the room as fast as I can. I get back to the practice area and sit on the ground Delia walks over and sits next to me.
“You okay?” Delia says with a concerned tone, putting a hand on my shoulder.
“I’m fine; I just saw Morgan and Madge, that’s it.” I respond, she gives me a reassuring nod. Practice continued but I seemed to be off my game. I couldn’t get those moments out of my head, that clumsy moment, the comforting moment. After practice, we went home and I tried to relax but I couldn’t. Not with this nagging feeling festering me, my thoughts wandering. I thought of Morgan and Madge, I thought of those shady men, also why she was crying, and why Morgan was just watching her. I also thought of Steele and his eyes, and his hand, and I tried to figure out how he was feeling, I tried desperately. I failed though, I couldn’t sort anything out, and maybe it’s impossible. I then tried to figure out my feelings, again no luck. Maybe that’s impossible too. Maybe anything involving he and I is just impossible.
