Lexi's POV
Right after school ended, my friends and I went to our beloved old school, Blue Clover. I guess the police had inspected the building already since there were no police cars in sight. It would be awesome if we found something they missed, I would feel like Sherlock Holmes or someone.
We entered the burned down building as if it had stayed as it always was. We took the familiar routes that were part of our everyday life. I saved the best room for last, the art room, it wasn't one of my best subjects, I did like it. However, I was better at it than 99% of the class so, it was a part of my day I would looked forwards to.
The long main hallway leading to the room at the back of the building was like walking through a hallway that lead to hell. Everything was burned, all the artwork oozing down the walls, or torn to ashes, the ruined roof looked like it was going to collapse again . Even as we walked closer and closer to the end of the hallway, it seemed like it stretched longer and longer, threatening to set fire again as objects in the shadows mocked us for coming back.
Finally, we entered the art room, it was not a work of art. The same feeling that haunted me as I walked through the scorched hallway visiting me again.
"Remind me why we're here again?" Luna asked.
"I need to find something important that may have survived the fire or maybe a body," Luna might have thought I was joking so she looked at me and laughed.
As I said before; Winter is a timid girl, so I gave her a reassuring smile as she looked really nervous. More nervous than I have ever seen her.
"Well hope you find it here, this is the last room so, we may be lucky. We even went through the principal's office! That was so cool!" Luna squealed.
I was focused on looking for where one could hide a body, so I just nodded and gave a grunt. There was a bookshelf that swung around to another room where you could work on your photos, it was called the black room. Maybe Luke was there? The art teacher really did a good job on building it in so maybe even the police and firefighters didn't notice it. As I walked up to it there were no markings in the ash covered floor to indicate it had been moved, I'm surprised not a lot of damage was done to it.I gave the shelf a pull, and of course nothing happened. "This is pretty jammed, a little help over here?"
"Yah yah just give me a sec."
Luna and Winter made their way towards me, all of us pulled and soon enough the shelf gave way. The room on the other side of the shelf lived up to it's name, without the lights on it was pitch black, residue from the fire didn't help either. My hand searched for the light switch, I flicked it a couple times and it didn't work. That probably was a bad idea, I'm too lazy for my own good. But, oh well it was worth a try. I asked my friends if they had a flashlight, they both shook their heads.
"I have my phone though," Luna offered me the device and I turned it on.
I think I might be deaf now, Luna let out the loudest scream that has ever come out of a human mouth. She even ran faster than anyone I've ever seen. I'm pretty sure of it. Winter and I just stayed surprisingly calm as we faced the burned object that splayed before us. It was a body, not sure if it's my brother's, but it was a corpse burned to the crisp.
I slowly backed away and motioned to Winter, "We should probably go now."
She muttered a quiet, "Okay." Then, went on about how I shouldn't have done that because it's a pain if we were to get involved in it.
I tuned her out, which I admit wasn't very nice of me, but I wanted some time to think about what had happened. Maybe it was Luke, even I am amazed with myself with how I haven't freaked out yet. Luna was probably calling the police by now, and when I walked over the broken main doors and looked up, my hunch was right.
She was frantically talking to whoever was on the receiving end of the line. On her knees hunched over holding her phone with both her hands, and trembling. This is probably how I should have reacted, but Winter comforted me. She was really good at keeping my mind off of this, I was also happy that a usually reserved person like her was taking the time to talk to me.
But why did you have to call the police Luna? Now we'll get in trouble for crossing the yellow crime scene tape thingy. I bet the officers won't even thank us for finding something they missed, as a good citizen I should get some credit. Especially since I probably know the burned body. I couldn't even run away because Winter and Luna would keep me with them so I can also shoulder some of the blame. Friends.
It took the police quite some time to arrive, I wish they at least tried to get here fast so I wouldn't have to listen to Luna talk about it. When they did arrive, they immediately asked where the body was, even though Luna had to repeat it to the person on the phone a bunch of times. About a minute passed when I heard a crash, it's not my fault if they damage the body.
Now I hear them shouting. The corpse must have came back to life and turned into a zombie, because I'm pretty sure they ran after someone. They gave up pretty easily though, I'm not sure why.
Winter did what all three of us wanted to do, she let out a sigh and shook her head. I chuckled a little bit and that earned a stern gaze from Luna. Sometimes it hurts when she acts so responsible, she always looks at me and never at Winter. I finally panicked for the first time when I remembered my mother might get involved. She is a very nice person, but when she gets mad she is a psycho, especially when she is so busy with work. My dad can't get involved in this because he is in the same place where Luke probably is now. I'm sure my friends also realized this, because when I said a woops that I meant to say in my head, they both had looks of horror upon their faces.
The cops sure took their sweet time, when they finally came back, they told us that we could go for now but they would need our contact information and addresses.
Before I turned to leave, I noticed something that was in one of the officers gloved hand. He wasn't standing near me, but he was close enough for me to recognize what he had. I watched enough detective movies to know what that was, it was a sample of blood.
"So, did you find what you were looking for?" Luna asked.
