"Why did it have to be her, why not me." I keep having flashbacks of the day it all happened, the day I lost the only person I cared about, the day I lost my best friend. It was a cold winter night, the kind of night where you can almost see your breath. Serena and I were playing down by the river, and that's when my life changed forever. I never knew that would be the last time I would ever see Serena again.
It was December 4, 1987. The river was in the backyard of 13 year old Carter Franchise. Serena and I were down by the crashing, freezing, raising rapids. Serena and I were playing tag until she slipped, hit her head, and became unconscious. I screamed for someone to come and help, but no one heard me. I couldn't wait any longer, so I dove into the river fished out Serena to only realize that she-. RIINNGGG RIIINNNGGG!!
"Ugh," I thought as I hit snooze on the alarm clock. Another annoying, depressing, terrible day at school. As I walked down stairs my mom stopped me.
"Thinking about her?" she asked me with worry in her voice.
"No," I said a little too sad for her liking.
"It's okay to think about her, Carter, she was your best friend," my mother said to me.
I didn't reply I just sprinted out the door to the place I hate the most.. school.
