Chapter Eighteen ~ Alex

The meeting actually went better than I thought. Sure, there was a lot of work that I had to do to get ready, but it was worth it. I didn't mind learning new songs on guitar, obviously. I am a guitar player. It's what I do.

After the meeting Liam came over to talk to me. He tried making small talk, but I could tell he was just wondering if I was okay. I appreciated that he was concerned, but like I told him, I was fine. And I would be if I got home without getting caught.

Before I did go home though, I caught up with Jacob. I need to explain some things to him before he left to go somewhere. Probably back to school.

"Jacob," I called. I caught his attention and turned to face me.

"Alex, wasn't that amazing?" he asked, grinning. I could tell he was really excited about going on this tour. I think we all were in some way. Even me.

"Yeah, it's like a dream becoming a reality," I agreed. "So, I need to talk to you about something real quick."

"What's wrong Alex?" Jacob's expression changed from happy and excited to concern.

"Nothing's really wrong, but I won't be able to come to work today. The only way I could figure out how to come to this meeting was to lie and tell my parents I was feeling sick," I said in a quiet voice. I didn't want anyone else hearing what we were talking about. Especially Liam since he was still around somewhere.

"So they don't know you're here?" Jacob asked. I nodded. "Alex, did you even ask them?"

"Well no, but I have a reason. My dad was getting on my case because I wasn't doing as well as he wanted me to do in school so I couldn't go from having an argument to asking to skip a day of school."

"Sadly, everything you just said makes sense even though I don't like what you're doing," he sighed.

"So you'll cover for me at work?" I asked hopeful.

"Sure. I don't really have a choice." He shrugged.

"Thanks Jacob! I'll see you tomorrow probably," I said.

"Bye Alex," he said before leaving. We had been talking outside in front of the building. I watched Jacob disappear in the opposite direction I was about to set out for. Someone clamped a hand on my shoulder before I could though. I jumped and turned to see it was only Zayn.

"So, skipping school," he said.

"How much did you hear?"

"All of it. Everyone's waiting over there by door for our car now. I was closer before though. Told them I wanted to say hi," he casually explained.

"Zayn, you're not going to tell them are you?" I asked.

"Of course not. You're not the only one who's pretended to be sick before. It's not that big of deal. Hopefully other meetings and rehearsals don't get in the way of school too much," he answered. A giant wave of relief washed over me when I heard this. I really didn't want to get caught by anyone other than Zayn.

"Thank you Zayn."

"Don't thank me. Just be careful when Liam's around. If he knew he would freak out," he said. I laughed a little and nodded. "Okay, I better get going. See you later Alex."

"See you later Zayn," I said to him as I waved. I watched him rejoin the boys before I started to walk to the bus stop.

I waited patiently for the bus to arrive. While I waited I admired the England weather that actually felt like the right season. Spring. It wasn't too warm or too cold. There was a lot of rain and overcast, but nothing that I wasn't used to. Today the sun peaked through the clouds and warmed me. So far today was going well.
