You walk through Diagon Alley with your parents, enjoying yourself as you look around for your school supplies. It's almost the beginning of your fourth year, and you want it to be perfect, without any friend drama, bad grades, or....you shiver at the thought of James annoying you all year. Your Mom starts to point out the bookstore when someone calls out to you, "Hey, y/n!"
You stop walking and nearly crash into your dad. It's James Potter, just the person you were trying to ignore. He walks over to you and your parents, the same foolish grin slapped onto his face. "Y/n, who's this?" your mom asks in a tone you don't like. You try not to gag as you violently shake your head no, going red from embarrassment. "It's just Potter," you mutter, hoping your parents will turn and walk away.
James holds out his hand to your dad, and then your mom. "Pleasure to meet you, Mr and Mrs y/l/n! I'm James Potter, a classmate of your daughter." Your parents happily greet him but then turn to you.
"We'll give you two some privacy." your mom says and you try to call after them but they've already left you alone. The only reason you don't want Potter around and annoying you all year is because even though you've refused and refused him, you've started to develop a teeny tiny little crush on him."Well, your parents seem nice," he says, smiling at you. You just look down at your feet, too embarrassed to do anything. Just as he's about to say something, his face goes pale. You frown. "What's the matter?" you ask just as a tall man and a short woman come bounding up to you two. The man has James' black hair and brown eyes, and the woman has light brown hair with hazel eyes. You realize that these are Mr. and Mrs. Potter, his own parents.
"Oh, dear, James! This must be Miss y/n!" his mother exclaims, excitedly shaking your hand. You try not to giggle as James himself looks mortified. "Oh, dear, I've heard sooo much about you! James never stops talking about you to me or Sirius!" she leans in closer and adds, "he also writes about you in his journal." You blush and giggle. "Oh, I insist you and your parents should walk around with us!" She remarks excitedly, looking at James with a smirk.
"Oh, I wouldn't want to bother you guys," You awkwardly say, feeling your cheeks burn even more as you try to avoid looking right at James.
"Don't be ridiculous! We'd love to take you up on that offer!" You hear your dad's voice exclaim from behind you. You stare at your feet to avoid eye contact as you try to comprehend what's going on. Why did this have to happen to me?!
You and James silently follow your parents after they introduce themselves to each other. They mindlessly wander throughout Diagon Alley, chatting up a storm and occasionally pointing out stores we should check out. You quickly glance to your right and accidentally make eye contact with James, only making your face get more red.
"How about you two go get some ice cream? Here," your mom says, handing you some money. "We're going to walk around some more, okay?" You reluctantly nod as you accept the money and turn towards the boy. "Let's go," you mutter.
You two get to the ice cream shop and order, sitting down in a booth with your bowls. You look up at him and start to laugh. You have to cover your mouth to not spit out your ice cream.
"What's so funny, y/n?" He teases, holding back a laugh of his own. "That was absolutely mortifying! Your parents are very nice as well, though," you giggle and he rolls his eyes.
"Yeah, sorry about that... they kinda threw me off," he shrugs. "Sooo... you write about me in your journal? And talk about me to your mother?" I tease him and his face goes right back to being red.
"Oh whatever.." he mumbles, shoving his mouth full of ice cream. You smile and try to ignore all of the butterflies in your stomach. You barely like him, y/n. Suck it up!! Remember he's annoying at school? You don't like him you don't like him you don't like him...
"What do you say about me?" You question, genuinely curious as to what he's had to say about you to his family. And in his diary, too.
"Oh, you know, just stuff..." he shrugs. He takes another scoop of ice cream and looks right into your eyes, a sincere look on your face. It throws you off guard since you weren't expecting him to drop his usual goofy, annoying attitude.
"Like how smart you are in all of our classes, and how funny you can be with your friends.. how kind you are to the younger students..just how amazing you are, y/n." He admits and you're left speechless. He gets up and throws away both of your trash and comes back to the table with a grin.
"Come on, let's go find Remus and Sirius!" He exclaims, his usual mannerisms back. You smile and follow him outside of the ice cream shop. His hand brushes against yours as you walk around, making your stomach flip. Deep breaths, y/n... it's just a tiny little crush... and he totally didn't just admit that he doesn't actually hate you and that he probably only annoys you because he likes you... which is crazy...
You take a deep breath and place your hand into his. You see James faintly smile to himself as he tightens his grip. After a few minutes, he suddenly starts to run forward, pulling you after him by the hand. You two laugh and run with each other to find your friends. Maybe this year won't be that bad after all with James Potter.
