Brushing past the prom committee trying to sell last minute tickets to prom, and dodging students and teachers alike I hurried to my favorite class in the day: It's not that I like the class, but it's who is in the class. Don't get me wrong, I like politics and talking about the latest political debates as much as the next guy, but when you have a girl like Sarah Compton in your class, it becomes a really good class to be in, and dating her made it that much more sweet. An hour and 40 minutes of class time next to the girl I love, and luckily the teacher usually turned whatever original topic we had for the day into a full blown debate, he hardly notices our sidebar conversations.
"Who would buy tickets to prom this close? I mean next Friday is prom." Sarah asked me.
"I'm not sure, but I'm glad we bought the tickets a while ago, there is less hassle involved. So tell me, what happened last night? You just stopped texting me. Did you fall asleep or something?" Sarah sat back in her chair and laughed for a second and responded to me.
"I didn't actually, my internet went out for a while, and I ended up falling asleep. I was going to text you before school but it was down still when I left for school."
"Sarah, you act like the internet being out is the end of the world." I laughed for a second and waited for her to say something. But she was paying attention to something else, and I realized most of the class and the teacher was too.
"Mike did you hear-"She got cut off by a loud bang, and suddenly two more.
"What the fuck....." I trailed off realizing the entire class was silent and there was something that sounded like a door slamming, a scream and several more bangs.
"Everyone just stay where you are." The teacher quickly said as he went to the door, and opened it looking into the hallway.
"HEY, YOU NEED TO BE IN-"The teacher tried to yell, but was cut off by several gunshots as he hit the floor, and bleeding profusely. Someone in the class screamed, and I pulled Sarah behind me as she grabbed my sides. That's when the person stepped into the classroom, and stood there for a second. I thought I recognized the student.
"Wait, is that-". I got cut off by a hail of bullets flying in the classroom, and I fell backwards, on top of Sarah trying to continue to shield her. Quickly and quietly the shooter left the room, then I felt like my shoulder was on fire. That's when I realized I had been shot, and in turn ignoring myself I checked on Sarah........
No, no, no, no, I knew something was wrong. That's when I saw it, I figured out why she wasn't responding to me, I saw a scarlet red filled hole in the side of Sarah's face.... I couldn't believe my eyes, I had failed to protect the one person I tried to protect... Words cannot describe what I was feeling. It must have been mere minutes, but it felt like hours as I held her there, holding on to Sarah swearing to myself that I would never let her go. In the background I could hear more gunshots and yelling, until two deputy marshals ran into the room as more bullets whizzed by. I quickly looked at them with my tear filled eyes and they saw I was alive. One of the officers grabbed me, and tried to pull me away from Sarah.
"SIR WE HAVE TO GET YOU TO SOMEWHERE SAFE!" the officer was trying to yell over the commotion, and that's when I realized more officers were in the room across.
"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?" I quickly asked them, and he explained the situation.
"THERE ARE MULTIPLE PEOPLE HOLDING HOSTAGES DOWN THE HALLWAY AND THEY ARE SHOOTING AT US WE NEED TO GET YOU TO SAFTEY!" The officer made his position clear, and he did not want me here.
"I CAN'T JUST LEAVE HER HERE, IM NOT GOING TO LEAVE!" The officer quickly looked down at Sarah, and tried to speak again, but an explosion went off. Then he grabbed me, ripping my grip free of Sarah, and pulled me down the hallway. Looking back, the entire hallway was covered in smoke; I had only seen something like this in a movie, and never thought any of this would happen to me.
