For his first job as a postmaster, Jayanta was posted five years ago in the small town where Anita lived. A certain Mr. Chatterjee who was a retired government employee lived in Anita's locality. He owned a two-storey building and he along with his wife, Mrs. Chatterjee lived on the top floor of the two-storey building. They were childless. The ground floor remained empty until of course the new comer arrived like the Prince Charming, stealing the heart of our sweet lady, Anita.

Jayanta was a modernized Bengali. He was an educated man, fond of reading Rabindranath and Sarat Chandra. His day did not begin without a copy of Anandabazar Patrika and a cup of black tea. Besides, Jayanta was a great lover of Shakespeare too and had great depth of English literature. He even spoke faultless English. His entire lifestyle, eating and dressing habits were all modern and resemble those of the Englishmen.

One afternoon while returning from college, Anita saw goods being unloaded from a truck in front of Mr. Chatterjee's house. And an unknown face stood at the gate, beside Mr. Chatterjee, giving instructions to the labourers dismounting the goods. The stranger was a man of about twenty-five years, a little above the medium height, of well knit frame, of a moderate complexion -neither too fair nor too dark. His busty eyebrows shaded his thoughtful eyes. He had the kind of face that stopped you in your tracks. He must have got used to that, the sudden pause in a person's natural expression when they looked his way followed by over-compensating with a nonchalant gaze and a weak smile. Of course the blush that accompanied it was a dead give-away.

That day when Anita saw him, she fell for him all at once. That day Jayanta had not noticed her for sure as he was very busy instructing the labourers unloading his goods. But that was just a mere beginning. A series of encounters followed thereafter.
