Being Found Is Just The Beginning

It was a normal Monday (for me at least) as I dragged myself out of bed. The light filtered in from my thin green curtain, and I had to raise my hand to my eyes so they wouldn't burn my retinas. My mother yelled at me from the kitchen, the hollow sound bouncing off the cedar hallway.

"Get up soon!" My mother yelled, which basically meant to be ready in 5 minutes because, as usual, I was going to be late for school. I huffed at myself under my breath, looking in the mirror at my tangled bedhead. My short brown hair curling like a rats nest, so to speak.

 Dammit, Azure!

I yelled to myself. I had left my earrings in during the night. I softly touched the red pricks behind my ears where the stud ends had punctured the soft skin.I carefully took the earrings out, trying not to touch the small welts. I jumped into the steaming hot shower and breathed in the grapefruit smell of my shampoo. Standing there, I let the steam soak into my pores as I tried to wake myself up.

"Hurry up!" my mother crows in a singsong voice from (again) the kitchen, where it seems she never leaves. When my mother is upset, she cooks. When she is happy, she cooks. I am sad to realize she really can't express herself in any other way than a blackberry cobbler sitting on the table.

"In a minute!" I scream back. I spread out my hand so I could put some body wash in when I realize that I forgot to take my injection this morning.

"Crap" I whisper under my breath as I see small silver scales starting to pop up on my arms. My wings threatened to explode out of my shoulder blades. Before I can remember what I'm doing I run as fast as I can (wrapped in a towel) to my room and inject the small needle into my arm.

"Thank god!" I sigh in relief, almost loud enough for my mom to hear. I can feel the injection working, as the small silver scales slowly recede back underneath my skin.

I'm so happy I got the needle in before I Turned.

Yes, you guessed it, I'm not a human. Never was, never will be.
