Theo picks me up after school. I hear a couple of girls whispering to each other as I climb into the beat-up old Toyota.
"Hey, Birdie," he says. "How was your first day?"
"It was okay, mom, thanks for asking," I answer playfully. He smiles.
"Roman told me about your folks," he says, his smile fading. "Man, I'm so sorry. If I were you I would probably be on the bathroom floor in an ocean of my own tears, eating Cinnamon Toast Crunch nonstop."
I raise an eyebrow. "Cinnamon Toast Crunch?"
He nods. "It's my favorite food."
He turns on the radio, to some talk show, and I stare out the window for the rest of the ride.

"Roberta," he says. I look up from my homework.
"Roman, you're home!"
He smiles. I like that his mouth goes lopsided when he smiles genuinely.
"Just wanted to say that..."
"What?"
He pulls my jacket hood up and over my eyes.
"You're such a cute little sister."
