We head to the burrito place. Theo sings to himself under his breath. I've noticed that he does that when he gets what he wants. Roman keeps glancing over at me worriedly. I wonder what made such a tough-looking guy so protective.
"Roman, do you have any siblings?" I ask.
He inhales sharply. Theo silently shakes his head at me in warning.
"Yeah," Roman says. I expect him to go on but he just stops there.
Theo smacks his palm to his forehead and leans over to whisper in my ear.
"That's a touchy subject for Roman," he says. "His little sister died when he was a kid and he thinks it's his fault."
Immediately I feel guilty for asking. Roman's already done so much for me, and I shouldn't have to be so nosy. Even though it was a simple question, I feel like I didn't deserve to ask it anymore.
I look over at Roman to see his face, but it looks as stoic as usual.
