Chapter 30

[Marie's POV]

"So you guys are back together, now?" Beth asks from her kitchen.

"No." I say for the tenth time in the past five minutes since I got here. "We're just cool now. Nothing's going on."

My sister's head pops up over the counter through the open view connecting the window and kitchen, squinting her eyes at me, "Mmmhmm.."

I just roll my eyes and take another swig of my whiskey, swishing it around in my mouth before letting it go down my throat. I wince at the bitter sting, annoyed that I actually kind of like it. "So, why don't you have beer again?"

Bethany's loud sigh echoes all the way to me, "Because, Marie, I've been converted."

"To, what? A man?" I chuckle.

She glares down at me before disappearing into the kitchen again, "I'm not even gonna argue how sexist that is, so I'mma just not not enjoy my lovely drink." She raises her glass and takes another taste of poison in a cup.

"That made no sense."

"I can't hear you over this completely oversized glass of delicious juice."

I look down at my own drink and shiver, "Ugh."

"Oh stop complaining," Beth walks around the corner and leans against the wall. "Anyway, Nick should be here in about fifteen and then we shall eat." Her voice goes from southern to English in a matter of seconds.

"Okay, whatever. Just make sure the one that shou not be brought up-"

"That's not how it goes."

"-isn't coming."

She brings her glass to her lips, obviously hiding the sneaky grin plastered across her face.

I narrow my eyes at her, "Bethany," I whine, slouching back against the couch.

Just as she's about to say something there's a knock on the door.

"Open up babe!" Nick's deep voice yells through the door.

As if her ass is on fire, Beth jumps and runs to the door. For a moment, she pauses to collect herself, pushing up her boobs and combing her fingers through her hair before opening the door.

I'd laugh, but I'm too annoyed.

Nick doesn't even wait for the door to open all the way before he damn near runs inside, bringing his girlfriend in a sickeningly adorable bear hug. Bethany squeals, laughing playfully as Nick kisses her neck.

I can't help the jealous feeling eating away at me while I watch them be all lovey-dovey. I'm not even gonna pretend I don't want that. It's just the person that I want that with is an engaged ass-pocket.

Speaking of ass-pocket, Ethan steps inside, shutting the door when Nick pushes his way inside, a joy-filled Beth still unapologetically attached to him like a newborn pup to its ma.

Ethan and I lock eyes as he sheds his coat, but I instantly look away.

It's only been a week since the storm, and I've seen him only which was for class. Even then I basically stared down at my desk the whole time.

Other than that nada. Zip. Nothin.

I mean, I guess it's mainly my fault seeing as I'm not completely open to talking.

I don't know why I'm acting so weird. We were good- are good.

It's just... how am I supposed to deal with seeing the man I'm in love with everyday, but can't touch him, let alone talk to him, without feeling like I'm doing something wrong. Or like a psycho-crazy bitch is gonna jump out of a bush and sock me in my face. So, yeah, I guess I have a good reason on avoiding him.
