Chapter 29
[Marie's POV]
A sudden chill breaks out across my body, forcing me awake.
I burry my face inside the pillow on Ethan's bed and tuck the covers around me hoping to get warm, but that doesn't do anything. I feel like I'm in a freezer and all I want to do is go back to sleep.
Well this isn't annoying. Hence the sarcasm.
Blowing out an annoyed breath, I silently lift the covers from over my head. It's really dark in the loft-slash-bedroom and all I can see is the shape of the ceiling fan, Ethan's bookcases along the wall, and his rattle snake tank. An involuntarily shiver rushes through me at the thought of the beast sleeping in there. Thankfully, it's secure or else I wouldn't have ever agreed to sleep up here.
I turn to look out the window only to be met with the faint shine of the moon and the distinct whistle of the wind.
I wonder what's wrong now.
Getting a sudden idea, I blow out another breath and just as I thought, a big cloud forms.
"Ethan!" I whisper loud enough so that Ethan can hear me from downstairs since he's sleeping on the couch. I strain my hearing to hear him, but I hear nothing except the rustling of the slightly calmed storm outside.
I sit up, the covers still intact around my body. "Ethan!" I whisper-yell.
Still nothing.
"I know you can hear me!" I say.
Nothing.
Oh you wanna play the silent game?
Annoyed that he's making me get up, I shove off the bed. I almost trip, but I quickly grab ahold of the nightstand to right myself. Just when I go to take another step at the end of the bed, I suddenly feel a hand grab my ankle.
"Ah!" I shriek in surprise reflexively kicking whatever has grabbed me, my foot coming in contact with something hard.
"Motherfu-mmm..." Ethan groans.
Whoops.
"Why are you on the floor? The couch is downstairs." I crouch low enough so I can feel around. At first I feel something plush, a pillow, then I feel skin and hair and muscle, his bare chest. I retreat my hand quickly. "Better yet, why are you naked?"
Ethan let's out a slow sigh, "To answer your first question, the heater broke and it's freezing downstairs-"
"It's freezing up here." I interject matter-of-fact.
There's a long pause. I could literally imagine him rolling his pretty green eyes which in turn I chuckle at, "Anyway to answer your second question, I don't sleep with a shirt on."
I let the silence consume the space between us, feeling like a complete idiot. "Right." I mumble.
It's silent for a few more moments until the sound of rustling covers breaks it. "What are you doing?"
He doesn't answer me as he stands and walks on one side of the bed, leaving the cover he had moments before behind. I can see all this because the gleam from the moon shining through the window is bright enough so I can at least see the outline of his body. Just as he's about to climb aboard, "I hope your not thinking about gettin' in." I cross my hands over my chest in an attempt to look dominant.
He stares blankly at me. I meet him levelly. We easily get into a staring contest and while Ethan seems to be completely fine, I can only imagine that I look like I ate something sour or something. His lips pull into a sly smirk and I instantly crack.
