Lianna's POV

The next day goes by seemingly slow. Mom and dad leave the house to attend a mandatory council meeting. Kayla walks out shortly after to go play with friends and I'm left alone. The strangeness of being alone settles in and I immediately become restless.

I want to know what Four needed to tell me. It's the only thing that's been on my mind since he left.

The clock on the wall reads a quarter to six. The meeting will last for at least an hour. It gives me enough time to go find Four. Against my better judgment, I will disobey my parents yet again.

The pinkish yellow sky shows of a day coming to a close and I hurry out the door, prepared to waist no time. The danger of this, is that I can be seen because of the daylight. It won't be easy to get around any Dauntless.

I think, quickly of any places Four would be and then it occurs to me that he would be at the same cabins Eric stays in. The pathway along the fence gets me there in as little as fifth-teen minutes.

Eric's cabin is the first one I see. All the lights are turned out so he must not be there. My body goes rigid as I become aware that he could show up anytime. I make my way around the backside and see another cabin set off in the trees.

There are five Dauntless leaders. The odds of it being Four's is slim. I'll have to take my chances, though, if I plan to make any progress. It may seem of little to no importance what he has to tell me but I need to know.

The steps of the cabin creek under my weight. I cautiously look around to see if anyone  is approaching but all is silent. I hesitate before going towards the door and look through the side window first. There, in the small living, hunched at the shoulders, sits Four. He looks graven with worry.

Thoughtlessly, I knock. Within seconds, he opens the door and swiftly pulls me inside as if he knew it was me.

"You shouldn't be here." Is the first things he says.

I hold back the snarky comment I would like to say and agree with him.

"I know."

His hand finds mine somehow and his strong fingers squeeze around my palm. It is as if he made the gesture involuntarily. My own fingers wrap around his as he leads me to the couch where we both sit.

"What did you have to tell me, Four?"

He looks away, staring into oblivion. Pins and needles, I wait for his response.

"Something is happening in Erudite. Things are changing rapidly."

My forehead creases in confusion and I look at our still holding hands.

"What does that have to do with Eric?"

With a manner of all seriousness, Four tightens his grip.

"Bethany's mother is Jeanine Matthews."

It still doesn't make sense to me and it must be obvious because Four lets out an exasperated sigh.

"Eric is playing her to get information."

Oh.

I pull away from his grasp. Too much to take  in at one time. My mind processes fast but not that fast.

"Why, why didn't you tell me that before? When you showed me that video?"

His eyes almost glare as if I should know the answer to that question.
