"Sammy!" Cameron called. "Sammy where are you?"
Sammy's head popped up from behind the tide pool rocks. There was a big smile on his pale face, and she smiled back as the boy waved.
"You came!" He said when she made it over to him, as if he couldn't believe it.
"Duh silly, you're my friend."
For hours the two played, searching through tide pools for shells and tiny crabs, splashing in the shallows until finally Cameron became too tired to swim, opting to sit with the waves lapping at her toes.
"C'mon Cam, don't you wanna play?" Sammy hadn't left the water, and didn't seem to have any intention on trying to.
"It's almost time for lunch." The young brunette said, sounding glum. "I gotta go home or Mama's gonna be mad.
"Let's play till then!"
The seven year old girl shook her head. "I'm tired Sammy. Gimme a minute."
The boy didn't argue, and instead pulled himself onto the beach to sit with Cameron. His bottom half stayed completely hidden beneath the foamy waves. His friend looked sad.
"Are you okay?" He asked her worriedly. "Did I do something?"
Cameron shook her head. "I wish I was like you."
He tilted his head in confusion. Water actually dripped out his ear. "Why? Your nice."
"But you're cool." She said. "You're super awesome, and you're like magic." Cameron looked over at Sammy with a sudden hopeful look in her eye. "Wait, you're magic! I could be like you, right?"
Sammy didn't debunk the idea. Instead he actually seemed to consider it, scrunching his nose as he thought. "There's -"
Suddenly the two heard Cameron's mom calling, and Sammy stopped short. "Uh oh."
"Why do you never want to meet Mama? She'd like you a lot."
"Can't." He said simply as he ducked down behind a rock. "C'mere real quick." He waved her over, and Cameron ducked her head down to his level. A surprise met her, in the form of the pale boy giving her a quick kiss on the cheek. She quickly pulled away, feeling her face grow hot, and seeing him blushing furiously. They both ignored Cameron's mom shouting for her again.
"Sorry." Sammy muttered. "S' how I saw them do it. Change 'em. There's waiting though. You gotta wait. Then you'll be like me."
Cameron beamed so brightly that the little girl seemed to glow like the sun. "Really? You mean it?"
"Yeah. I think so." Sammy was still blushing beet red and refusing to look up. His long wet hair hung in his face and hid his eyes from her.
"Thank you Sammy, thank you thank you so much!" Her mom called again, and this time she turned around towards the voice. She faced Sammy again, still smiling, the other still looking away. "I gotta go. Mama's gonna worry if I don't. Promise you'll wait for me?"
"Promise."
With that, Cameron nodded and ran to her mother. When she turned back to the water, Sammy was gone.
She waited for months, and months turned into years. Sammy's visits slowed before ending entirely, and the little girl soon forgot about the boy. He was passed into childhood memories as an imaginary friend by mother and daughter alike. The kiss and the promise to wait were forgotten, too.
Cameron and her mother moved inland. And that's where the story begins.
