The man with the green eyes comes into the coffee shop every morning at 8:53 am, on the dot.
Castiel is always the one to make his coffee, strong, with a little dash of milk and three sugars. After about two weeks of ordering the same thing, Castiel decides that it's time for him to simply make the man's drink and have it waiting for him when he gets in to the shop.
At 8:50 am, he steps away from behind the register and begins to go through the motions. He selects a to-go cup and pours in the blend that the man likes into it, watching the little curls of smoke that rise from the top. Next, he pours in a small, measured amount of milk, followed by three teaspoons of sugar. He mixes it together and covers it, making sure the lid is secure before he slips the cardboard sleeve onto the cup. He places it on the counter and stands back, glancing between the cup, the door, and the clock hanging on the opposite wall.
At 8:52 am, he begins to busy himself, wiping down the counter, and wiping away the stray sugar crystals that had spilled onto the wood. At 8:53 am, the door tinkles and he turns around, a smile on his face, except, it's not his green eyed crush, it's a pretty woman with dark eyes and dark hair.
She smiles at him and he smiles back thinly.
"Good morning, I'll have a caramel latte, tall, please, thanks," she says as she pulls out her cell phone from her pocket.
Castiel nods and turns around to make her drink. He does it quickly, and when he turns around he inhales sharply when he sees the green eyed man standing behind her on line. He slides her coffee cup over to her and rings her up, doing his best to ignore the little tremor in his hand as he hands over her change and receipt.
The woman walks away, sipping her coffee, and the green eyed man steps up next.
"Hey, I'll have—"
"The usual?" Castiel asks with a little smile. He pushes the cup over and watches the man expectantly.
The man's eyes widen and he looks at the cup then up at Castiel. "Oh, yeah, I guess," he says with a little laugh.
"You're late today," Castiel says with a little wink as he rings up the purchase. He glances up and is pleased to see a little flush blooming on the man's cheeks.
The man smiles and yawns. "Slept in by accident," he says with a little shrug. He takes a sip of the coffee and closes his eyes. "Listen man, you make the best coffee," he says with a little moan.
Castiel smiles. "I do my best."
"Yeah, I bet you do," the man says.
They stare at each other for a moment before bursting out into laughter.
"I gotta run but...I'll see you tomorrow?" the man says.
Castiel smiles and nods. "Yeah. I'll see you tomorrow."
"I'm Dean, by the way," the green eyed man says as he extends a hand.
Castiel grips Dean's hand and shakes it firmly. "Nice to meet you, Dean. I'm Castiel."
Dean smiles and he walks away. The bell tinkles on the door as he exits the shop.
Castiel folds his arms across his chest and smiles. "Dean," he murmurs softly.
The next morning, the bell on the door tinkles at 8:45 am. When Cas looks up, he expects to see the woman with the dark hair, but instead, he sees Dean.
Dean smiles at him and walks up to the counter. "I decided to come in a little early today. To make up for yesterday."
Castiel laughs and shakes his head. "The usual?" he asks.
Dean nods. "The usual."
