CHAPTER NINE: PERPLEXITY

"Did you drop this?" Harry asked me suddenly; causing me to turn around and see what he was on about.

In his hand was a small silver locket with a slightly rusted chain and a plain oval-shaped pendant that desperately needed polishing. At the sight of it, I gasped and my hand immediately flew to my neck; and after feeling that it was bare I couldn't help sighing in relief at the sight of the necklace in Harry's hand.

"Oh my God, thank you," I took the locket from him gratefully, "I don't know what I would've done if I lost it,"

"How come it fell off in the first place?" He asked with a thoughtful frown.

"I dunno," I was about to put it on when I looked at the clasp and gasped, "oh shit...that's why...fuck!"

"What is it?" Harry peered at the clasp with squinted eyes.

"The clasp's broken," I whimpered, "oh Christ, this is never gonna get fixed!" I felt like I was going to cry.

"Hey, don't jump to conclusions," Harry gave me a small smile and held out his hand, "let me take a look at it,"

With a little sniffle I dropped the necklace into his open palm. He held the broken clasp up to his face; staying silent for several moments as he inspected it.

"Is the chain of any importance to you, or is it just the pendant?" He asked me.

"J-Just the pendant," I quickly wiped my eyes as I began to feel them getting wet with tears, "c-can you fix it?"

"I should be able to do a thing or two with it,"

My sad eyes perked up immediately. "Really?"

He smiled at me and nodded. "I promise – I'll get right on it as soon as we get back,"

My eyes widened slightly as I grew startled by his kindness. "Wow...th-thank you, Harry,"

"No problem," he smiled again and returned the locket to me, "you got a pocket or something to stick that in for now?"

I nodded and was about to put it in my jacket pocket when he stopped me.

"Hold on a minute," he inspected my pockets carefully, "they're a bit shallow, don't you think? It'll just fall out again. Here – I'll hold onto it for you. My pockets have zips on them. That is, er, only if you don't mind..."

"OK," I smiled and gave it back to him, "thanks,"

He smiled before taking the locket and dropping it into his jacket pocket – zipping it up and patting it lightly.

"Safe and sound," he said with a promising tone in his voice.

"Thanks," I said again, "really – I'm so grateful for your help,"

"Well, obviously it's something that means a lot to you,"

I nodded.

"So it's no trouble."

I couldn't do anything except lower my eyes and shoot a coy little smile towards the ground.

"Come on," he said to me, "we're halfway to Lochpine, and I just realised I haven't even given you one of those breaks I promised you," he gently placed his fingers under my chin and lifted my face so that I was looking at him, "let's get one out of the way now, shall we?" He asked me with a knowing smile.
