Hatsune Miku looked down in distaste at the lab below her. She was above the main operations room, behind a glass wall. She looked down to the gray and bland machinery, all beeping and showing colors and switches with an electric whirl which she could feel through her android sensory.

Her creator, and several of his team members, stood around the operating table, all around the small human who looked only five or so. They were replicating Miku. Only . . . without the computer chips, metal pieces, synthesizers, silicone to represent flesh and other miscellaneous humanoid pieces.

If she could cry, she would’ve. She sighed instead. It was yet another project that the Corporation had produced. They were going to slowly replace Vocaloid with real humans. Real Vocaloids, starting with Miku. She had been the first created for the Vocaloid voices (but not the first Vocaloid created), so why wouldn’t they make the first human Vocaloid after the first modeled Vocaloid?

How were they going to shut her down, once or if this human was completed? A virus? There wasn’t and ‘off’ button for Miku. Or for any of the Vocaloids for that matter. Were they going to replace all the Vocaloids? Or just Miku? What if the human (they called her Miku Sune- Future Sound, after Hatsune Miku- First Sound Future) failed? What would they do with her?

These mad men had found a way to manipulate DNA in such a way as to control every single part of the body and appearance in any way they wanted without harming the overall structure. She functioned properly; she had all her amino acids, her limbs functioned correctly, her neurons were stable . . . but they had manipulated her DNA to copy Miku’s hair color and eye color- that beautiful turquoise.

Already Miku Sune looked a lot like Hachune Miku. Except, bigger, and more human-like. But Hatsune Miku was already perfected to represent a human being. She was perfect in appearance. Her voice was perfect.

Which made Miku wonder just how they were going to get Sune’s voice to replicate her own? Surely they wouldn’t implant a synthesizer in her throat. That would just make her another Vocaloid in a living body. No, they were going to find a different way.

Sune was wrapped only in a white towel, letting the team observe her, as they regularly did, to make sure she was still functioning as a human. Her huge eyes watched them, scared as always. And as always, she stared down at her newly-printed mark upon her left shoulder: 001. Miku was being replaced: 01 was going to be 001. Her hair was still short, and given time, they would let it grow to Miku’s length.

The poor girl. Miku almost felt sorry for her.

Their eyes met for a brief second, and for a fleeting second, Miku saw herself in a reflection in the human’s face.

Eleven Years Later

“Baka, baka!” Kasane Teto cried to her hand-held device. She was still trying to perfect the art of raising a Tomogatchi. Miku had gotten bored with such antics, and spent most her time writing songs.

“Teto!” Kagamine Len snapped. “I’m trying to hear this!”

“Len!” his twin ‘sister’, Kagamine Rin interjected. “You’re being just as loud.”

Miku giggled. The three often bickered with each other, although Rin was the one who bickered the least.

Teto stuck out her artificial tongue at him and went back to tapping the small buttons. Len turned back to his game.

Gumi sighed. “How much longer are we going to be here? I’m bored!”

We had all been grouped into a room at the Corporation, on orders of our creator. He said he had wanted to meet with us.

“Patience, Gumi. I’m sure we won’t be here much longer.” Miku answered. She tried to reassure her friend.

They had been waiting nearly an hour.

“Why would he want to meet with us?” Len asked, absorbed in his game. “We’ve been doing our schedules perfectly.”

“A schedule change?” Meiko suggested.

“Not likely.” Kamui Gakupo answered.

“I agree.” Miku simply said.

“Why?” Kaito turned to her. She was acting funny, and he had a feeling she knew something that everyone else didn’t.

Miku avoided the eyes upon her. She especially avoided Yowane Haku’s, Black Rock Shooter’s and especially Kaito’s.

She shrugged.

“Miku, please tell us. I think you know something.” Megurine Luka pleaded. Her voice was calm and pleasing.

“Miku Sune.” Miku simply answered.

“Oh.”

Everyone knew who she was. Everyone knew what was happening, what was going on.

Their creator entered. He greeted them. They bowed respectfully, immediately turning all their attention to him. He looked to have pressing matters on his mind.

“Vocaloids.” He said. “I’ve called you all here today, to show you something very special.”

Without another word, he turned on his heels and headed out the room. He was always a man of short words. They followed, clustered. Miku took notice of who all was here today. Let’s see . . . there was already Kaito, Meiko, Len and Rin, Luka, Gakupo, Teto and Gumi. Haku and Shooter too. But joining them was Lily, Akita Neru, Honne Dell and SF-A2 Miki.

They were led into an enormous meeting room, were they found Dead Master (to Shooter’s disappointment), Namine Ritsu, Soune Taya and to Miku’s worst disappointment: Zatsune and Hagane Miku.

They each were seated, all facing their creator. Enemies avoided each other, as usual, with Shooter and Master on total opposite sides of the room. They were always instructed to do so, because well, they fought a lot.

“Miku.” Their creator said, pointedly.

Hatsune Miku stood.

“Today, I want you all to realize the full potential we have come to. We have breached new technology; we have advanced the world of music. I know that you all know about our new project. I want to reassure you that there is no disappointment to be expected of this.”

He turned, his arm extended out towards a shady corner.

From the shadows stepped out a girl. Her slim body was perfect; her skin a beautiful cream. Her ankle-length hair was that familiar turquoise color. Her eyes were bright, with a shining turquoise luster, but scared and feeble. They were framed by thick, dark lashes. Every single one of her features was perfect.

She was dressed in Miku’s first outfit, and it fit her perfectly. The only difference, was the fact that her hair hung loose, instead of the trademark pigtails.

Every Vocaloid stared right into Hatsune Miku’s reflection.

“Welcome, the first Human Vocaloid: Humvoid. Miku Sune.”

All Miku feared surfaced. Her end was closing in, and fast.
