Fang

Prolouge

"He's beautiful, Cindertail." Cindertail gasped at the sight of her new born kit, wailing for his mothers love. She madly lapped him with all of her strength. Redstripe let out a mrrow of laughter at his mate ferociously lapping their kit.

"If you don't stop know," Featherheart, the medicine cat, mewed. "He will get ill. Too much licking isn't good for him." Cindertail all of a sudden stopped lapping her kit, and pushed him closer to her belly.

"Redstripe? What do you think his name should be?" Redstripe got closer to the wailing kit, and inspected him for any special features. A big fang stuck out of his lower lip. "I'm not sure. But what is this?" Featherheart got closer and finally noticed the fang. "It's a fang, and it's stuck in his lower lip."

Redstripe sneered at Featherheart. "Well of corse I know that, but can you make it not go through his lip?" Featherheart glared at Redstripe before continuing to speak. "Well...no. It will always be there."

Cindertail grunted at the two arguing warriors. "Oh, would you two stop? You have always been fighting since we were all kits." The two cats stopped at her command. Then silence filled the air, until the kit made a soft mew of gratitude. "See. He likes it better when it's quiet and peaceful."

Rainpaw slowly made his way into the nursery. "Rainpaw! You are my apprentice, correct?" Featherheart meowed boldly. Rainpaw quickly nodded his head. "Then go fetch some moss, and dip it in the spring. Cindertail and her kit need water."

Rainpaw stood for a minute staring at the new kit and wrinkled his nose at the sight of his fang. "Hurry!" Snapped Feathertail, shocked at his apprentice. Rainpaw dashed out of the nursery, with fright at his mentor's order.

Redstripe lay down next to his mate, and lovingly lapped her head. Cindertail did it back to him, and they both lay their heads down and cuddled with their kit. It was as if they told Featherheart that now was a good time for him to leave, by just getting ready for the night to fall.

The next morning, the kit woke up Cindertail and Redstripe with a wail for attention. Cindertail gasped, and quickly gave him a couple of licks, but not enough for him to get ill, and only for him to calm down.

Then they noticed the bundle of damp moss in front of where they lay, and they all took a turn of gently lapping the water from it.

"Oh! I just remembered! We haven't chosen a name for him yet!" Cindertail mewed. Redstripe stared thoughtfully at the small bundle of fur, and gave it a quick lick. "Maybe another cat will have a good name. We can ask around."

Cindertail briefly nodded her head in agreement, but was still unsure if she wanted someone else naming her kit. Redstripe slowly got up and padded out of the nursery.

When he came back, he had gotten many name ideas from the clan. "How do you like Birchkit?" Cindertail wrinkled her nose and shook her head. "Um... Okay. What about Darkkit? Or Flamekit?" Cindertail shook her head again, not liking the names her fellow clanmates had chosen.

All of a sudden, a tiny squeak came out of the kit. Cindertail and Redstripe looked at him with wide eyes. He did it again, but this time more clearly. "F..an..g." Cindertail and Redstripe stared at each other with shock.

Featherheart, Rainpaw, and their clan leader, Nightstar, all came into the nursery. "That's it Redstripe." Redstripe meowed back confusingly,
"What is?" There was silence in the nursery, until Cindertail softly chuckled.
"His name."

Redstripe turned to look at Nightstar to see if a one name would be okay. Nightstar had a weird look on her face, and then finally spoke up. "I don't know. Oh... Okay. I guess for now. But if StarClan gets mad, then we will have to change the name."

Cindertail squealed with delight. "So... What's his name?" Rainpaw slowly meowed, as her took a paw step forward. "Fang. His name is Fang."
