Chapter 10

Thursday Afternoon...

Riker POV

I was angrily packing my clothes in a suitcase for our trip. Ever since Jeff and I had the disagreement about this trip being fun, he'd kind of become shy again. He didn't really talk to me that much or anyone else for that matter, besides mom and dad. And he wouldn't make eye contact with me.

"Did you pack yet?" I asked Jeff.

"No."

"Well it's Thursday. We're leaving tomorrow, so you should."

Jeff rolled his eyes, and got up to leave the room.

"Jeff, wait! Where are you going?"

"The bathroom. Is that ok?" Jeff said, annoyed.

"Yeah... Sorry."

Jeff slammed the door on his way out.

You'd think he'd be excited to go since he thinks it'll be fun!

I finished packing up my clothes, and then packed some things to do in my backpack. When I was done, I went downstairs. Jeff was setting the table alone.

"Want help?" I asked.

"No. It's probably not fun enough for you."

I rolled my eyes.

"Fine. Do it yourself..."

"Riker, your attitude sucks!"

I turned around to face him.

"What?" I asked.

"Do you think your parents planned this, wanting to torture you or something!? They planned it because they thought it'd be fun. And you won't have any if you don't give this trip a chance!"

My mom walked over to us.

"He's right, you know, Riker," my mom said.

I rolled my eyes, and walked into the living room.

Jeff POV

I finished setting the table.

"Jeff, can I talk to you for a second?" Mom asked.

"Yeah."

I walked over to her.

"I really appreciate what you're trying to do... Get Riker to have a better attitude and all that... And I just wanted to tell you that he can be pretty stubborn sometimes. So don't get discouraged, ok?"

I nodded.

"Awesome. Thanks."

She hugged me, sighing.

"I can't believe I missed 16 years of your life..."

"Aw, mom, you're going to make me cry."

She hugged me tighter.

"Jeff. Be honest. Which family did you like better? This one, or your old one?"

"Mom, obviously this one! My old parents would hit me... They'd torture me... I hated them. And I always felt bad for hating my parents because I thought it was awful to hate your own family. But they hurt me, and it was almost every day. Being at Dalton was amazing because it was my safe place. And my roommate Nick was my best friend. I could tell him everything that happened at home, and he'd just listen and make me feel better. Well... Until one day... He got really mad because I'd gotten some really bad bruises, and he called Child Protective Services, and... now I'm here..."

"Well I'm glad you're ok. And I'm glad you like it here better."

"Mom, I like it here way better! And I love you and dad, and I love that I have siblings. Especially Riker, even though he's kind of being a little bit of a jerk right now..."

"Have you and Riker been doing some twin bonding?"

"Yeah, a little bit. He's an awesome brother."

"Aw, well I'm glad to hear that."

"Hey, mom?"

"Yeah?"

"When's dinner?"

"About 20 minutes. By the way, thanks for setting the table."

"No problem... I think I better go pack now..."

"Alright, Jeff."

I went upstairs to mine and Riker's room. I got my suitcase, and packed up my clothes. To be honest, I didn't have the best clothes. My parents hardly ever let me buy anything I wanted. They'd buy things from cheap stores. And that was hardly ever.

I packed some skinny jeans, shirts, underwear, socks, pajama bottoms, and my swim suit. I also packed my 2 hoodies.

I packed some things to do in my backpack, and then brought my backpack and suitcase downstairs. Everyone had been putting their luggage by the front door. Dad would pack them in the van tomorrow morning.

Mom called us for dinner, so I walked over to the kitchen table. I sat down, and Riker sat as far away from me as possible. I know we had... a disagreement... But I think he's taking this a little bit too far! He's my brother. He should be a little nicer to me...
