Hazel's POV
It was the first day of summer break for 13 year old Hazel Levesque, and she and her friends Annabeth and Piper were looking for summer internships. They had tried the mall, the shop at the corner, even being camp counselors. Nope. But Hazel knew what to do. She knew a great place where she knew everyone very well: The Mental Institute down the road. Her half-brother, Nico di Angelo, is a patient there. She visits him every day. As she made her way through the front door, she ran right into the person she'd been looking for- the main doctor, Dr.D. She asked him if her and her friends could have the internship- he said yes, but as long as they'd show up everyday and on time.
"Thanks Dr.D!" She exclaimed.
"Whatever, Hailey." He said
"It's Hazel." She corrected
"Whatever," he said, and he stalked off.
Hazel decided to go visit her brother while she was there. She went up to his room- Room 13- and knocked. She heard silent sobs and a shuffle of feet as the door opened to reveal a red, puffy eyed Nico. Nico di Angelo, 14 years old, Hazel's half-brother had been crying. Hazel had never seen him cry before. He gestured for her to come in, and she stepped in and sat on his bed.
"Is everything okay?" She asked
"Yeah, it's alright.. I'm fine." He answered, wiping at his face with his sweater sleeve.
"Has Leo done anything weird lately?" She asked with a smirk.
"No, he hasn't been bothering me all that much..." Nico replied, his cheeks flushing. It was no question that Leo was smitten with Hazel's brother, and he returned the feeling. Leo was a scrawny, elfish looking boy who lived in Room 9. He had lost his mother in a fire that he thinks he started. Since he survived, he thinks he's prone to fire- which is why he sets himself on fire every now and then, resulting being a patient here.
"Oh. Have you seen him around?" Hazel asked, wanting to see her brother smile.
Nico shook his head.
"He's been in his room a lot lately. He won't let me in." He says with a frown.
"Alright.. Anyways, what's wrong?" She asked in a soft voice.
"Nothin'... I just heard her again." Nico said with dismay.
"Bianca?" Hazel asked, referring to Nico's older sister who had died in a fancy all girls' boarding school.
Nico nodded and hugged his knees. Hazel didn't really know what to do, so she said, "Hey- how about I go talk to Leo and see if he wants to visit you? You two are friends, right? Maybe we can talk about what Bianca said."
"That'd be nice.. But I don't want to be a bother to him. Or you." Nico answered, sniffling.
"I'll talk to him.. And you're no bother, Nics." She said with a smile.
"Okay. I'll be waiting here.. Let's just hope no ghosts stop by... " He answered, in a soft yet harsh tone.
Hazel waved as she made her way to Room 9.
