Teller of the Pointed Stones went to where the kit-mothers raised their kits. Earlier that day Blue Water that Rushes in River had given birth to three kits. Blue's mate, Hawk that Swoops at Mouse, had been taken away by his very name, a hawk. Stoneteller felt sorry for Blue and he wanted the three kits to have good lives. Even though their father was gone.

"How are your kit, Blue?" Stoneteller asked.

"They are fine," Blue answered. She looked at Stoneteller, her blue eyes shining. "Do you want to know what I have named them?"

"What have you named them?"

Blue nosed one of them, which was brown. "This one is Hawk that Flies in the Sky." Then she nosed another one, which was blue-grey and white, like her. "This one is Hare that Hops on Frozen River." Then she nosed the last kit, which was black with white spots. "And this one I have named Night that Blazes in the Sky."

"You have named them well, they will name great cave-guards and prey-hunters, Blue."

"Thank you, Stoneteller."

"Did you name Hawk that Files in the Sky after Hawk that Swoops at Mouse?"

"I will keep his memory alive till my last breath and he looks too much like him."

"I understand that, Blue."

"I know you do, Stoneteller."

"I must go speak with the Tribe of Endless Hunting."

Stoneteller left the kit-mother and her new-borns and went to the Cave of Pointed Stones. She stared at the pointed stones, then at the pool of water. Suddenly, she saw something in the pool! It was a reflection of the sky.

Stoneteller left the cave and stood outside. It was warm, as it was the time of Freed Water. The stars in the sky were blazing and shining.

"Tribe of Endless Hunting, you cannot mean that I must take on a to-be. I am young still!" she howled. "There is plenty of time!"
