Chapter 1

Steel turned to look at Zane as he rubbed his face with his now callused hand. What the fuck had they gotten themselves into here? “That’s exactly what Mike Codey said. Two young vets were coming to take over the care of the animals. One will provide care for the cattle landing in your arena. The other chick will provide car for the horses, landing in my arena.” I walked to the back of the room and lifted the tube with the map of the land.

“The place is split up into four quadrants.” I say as I unroll the plans for the whole place. “Here we have the oil rigs and there the grazing land. We are split up on this side, with you taking the cattle side. Then I have this side with the horses.” I sighed, I still have no idea how I ended with running the insemination side of the job. But it’s not like Zane had it any better. He has to inseminate cows for goodness sake.

“You know who, is looking after those two up there. The arrival of these damn females is going to complicate everything dammit…”

Zane walked over and slapped me on the back. “Don’t see why, it’s not like we’re friendly with anyone around here anyway.” That was true, I knew why I wasn’t friendly, and he had yet to find out why Zane wasn’t. He didn’t talk much about his problems. Then again it wasn’t like he was the listening kind anyway. This was a job and only a job as far as he was concerned.

He had made it a point in life to be a loner. His family was long gone and so was the girl that so called loved him. Seemed she loved money more than him. But that’s ok with him, as far as he’s concerned a woman was only good for one thing and one thing only.

“So we proceed as before then?” He asked Zane, he could do that keep to himself and do his job. Yeah, he could do that.

Rose placed her last dress in her suitcase and yelled for her dad. “Come on old man, let’s get this show on the road.” She couldn’t get her case shut and needed him to come sit on it. But instead here came her pain in the butt brother and unfortunately not alone.

“What do you think baby? This here is going to be the extension to my room. I plan to knock down that wall and maybe put in a huge hot tube. There will be one restriction though, no clothes allowed.” He wiggled his eyebrows at her and she giggled.

Oh Lord give me strength. How many more airheads is he going to do?  She realized he was only 18 years old and not mature yet. Not like her 23 years at least. But here she was ready to take on the world. She had finally become a vet. A year late but one none the less. Plus she was going to go to Texas to work in the Codey ranch. What more can she ask for? Oh yeah,   she will be working with her best friend Percy. Life can’t get any better than this.
