Chapter 2- Shadows Cast by Earth

So far today I've gotten through my first and second period without too much difficulty, now I was heading to my third class which would hopefully pass the same. I had Miss Malkin for my Genetic class with Percy, and turns out, Felicity too. She gives me another wink as she sits down at the front of the class, while Percy and I take seats beside each other in the back. I think Percy is little worried he'll embarrass himself if he talks to her.
"Alright class settle down, we'll be going over the basics together today. What's the number one thing you should know before you learn anything else?" A few people timidly raise their hands. "Yes-Felicity, is it?"
Felicity puts down her hand and nods, "The number one thing to know is that there are mainly three types of superhuman genes: the Animus Gene which deals with powers of the mind or emotion, the Proprius Gene which comes with powers from physical traits like flying with wings, and the Robur Gene of physical powers of speed and strength." Miss Malkin beams at her and writes what Felicity said on the white board. I look at Percy who is shuffling inside his backpack for something,and then he gets that something out and begins eating it.
"What is that?" I ask him.
"Yes,I would very much like to know that also since it is so interesting." says Miss Malkin. The whole class shifts in their seats to look at Percy, but he just smiles lazily and holds the thing up for everyone to see. It looked to be a pizza slice inside a taco shell. "And what is that?" she asks.
"It's my newest and greatest foodical invention, combining my Mexican and Italian lineage. Ladies and gentleman, I call it...The Paco." The class bursts out laughing and even the teacher looks tempted to smile. Finally Miss Malkin gets the class to settle down and she writes something else on the board below the three gene types, a number four.
"Can anyone tell me the the fourth,and rarest,super gene?" A girl whose name I think was Willow, raised her hand slowly into the air.
"Yes?"
Willow bit her lip nervously,"The Umbra Gene." she said.
Everyone went quiet, the air seemed to have been sucked from the room.
"Go on, what abilities does this gene normally come with?" Miss Malkin said. "Well, powers from this gene could also technically fit under others, one example is the ability to...forsee the future or, or-bend time."
Percy whistled,"I'd love to see my future, I could see my bad grade before I get it, to better prepare myself, for my immense failure of course." The whole class grinned and some even laughed, and the tension in the room deflated.
Miss Malkin cleared her throat and brought the class to attention once more,
"Yes, Willow, in theory those are some abilities that come with the Umbra Gene. Does anyone know why it's called the Umbra Gene?" Percy, still chomping on his ridiculous snack raised his hand, and with an immense effort swallowed his humongous bite and spoke. "It's because of the dude, Edward Cornelius Umbra who had the ability to control and become shadows, right? He had the Gene, in theory."
Miss Malkin looked like she was gonna scold him for his snack again but instead continued with the lesson. "Yes, he supposedly discovered this type of gene and it was named after him. It's been nicknamed the God-like gene. Now, moving on, can anyone tell me who was the strongest superhuman of our time?" Many people raised their hands, but now the intrigue was over and the rest of the class threw paper planes and slept for the rest of the class. I fell asleep myself, drowsiness making my eyelids droop until...Zzzzzzzz.
I saw chaos, chaos everywhere. Flashes of light in the darkness, blood curdling screams echoed from every corner, shadows darting back and forth. Music was playing, and then,it wasn't. Lights came on from the gymnasium ceiling, illuminating the horrifying scene below: people dead, screaming, sobbing while hiding under tables, while others were fighting for their lives. A black smoke darted here and there at people, who would fall dead or severely injured afterwards. The smoke lunged at Eve and I heard the crack of her neck as it was twisted, Blue landed beside her a second later, with his chest torn open and his heart exposed, still beating. Suddenly, a voice called out, sounding like nails against a chalkboard. "Join me,and the rest shall be spared..." Then it was black, the music playing again...
