Chapter Twenty-One
I'd been to see Mrs. Mellier the next morning, but even as she asked me questions and I was forced to lie on the spot to make sure I both got my way, but didn't give Amber any reason to chase me to my next dorm room with her hatred, my mind had been elsewhere.
It was swimming from the memories of the night before, and I couldn't stop the quirk of my lips even as I returned to my dorm room to collect my things. Mrs. Mellier had come with me so that she could show me to my new room, and hopefully that would keep Amber in check.
I sauntered into the room as though I didn't care that I'd been forced to leave my dorm because of some bitch, and went to pack my things together. Mrs. Mellier had been fed the lie that I'd slept in an arm chair in the common room all night, which Ethan and I had discussed beforehand.
Amber gave me a sour look, but with Mrs. Mellier leaning against the door frame and observing the room, she didn't open her mouth. Her gaze promised that I'd pay at some point, though.
When I lifted my pillow to grab the earplugs I kept underneath it, I was greeted by a piece of paper. I shoved it into my pocket without reading, unwilling to give Amber the in-person reaction if she had been the one to put it there.
I didn't have very many things to pack, and most of them had never left my suitcase in the first place. The matron didn't appreciate an untidy bedroom.
Mrs. Mellier was tapping her foot by the doorway and two girls had been asleep when I first entered, so I was moving as fast as I could. The note was burning a hole in my pyjama pocket, though. I was dying to see what Amber had managed to threaten me with this time; whether it was something I needed to be worried about or not.
It probably wasn't the smartest move, but as I lugged my suitcase out of the door behind me, I sent Amber the biggest grin I could muster. It wasn't too hard after last night with Ethan. I was on the biggest high, and nothing could tear me down.
Mrs. Mellier led me down the corridor and showed me to the dorm I would be moving into. There were only three girls in there, despite the six beds. This must have been the outcast dorm, and I couldn't have been happier about it. "The matron will bring you a key in the next half an hour. I hope that you'll be happier here."
If I'd been optimistic, I could have almost sworn the smile she gave me was genuine.
The girls welcomed me and told me their names. I only knew one from ballet, but she was someone who'd mostly stayed in the background. They didn't look like they had any urge to make conversation, but I didn't care. Silence was something I valued highly after sharing with Amber.
After settling myself in, I sat on my bed and pulled the note into my lap where no one else would be able to see what I was doing.
Any colour in my face faded. The permanent grin I'd been wearing all morning failed for the first time.
I know you were at the Chemical Plant. I have proof. Don't mention this to anyone.
I screwed up the note and shoved it in my suitcase, hand shaking. The police might not have found out, but someone had, and someone planned to exploit it. It had to be Amber. She must have heard me come in on the night and put two and two together. She was going to ruin me.
My good mood vanished. I'd thought my new dorm room and my truce with Ethan had been the turning point. That everything would be good from here on out.
This note threw me back into hot water.
