Together at Last

I was finally going back. I learned everything I needed to know. I had a dark cloud looming over me but the sun was drowning the darkness. I was so close.

Firestorm started to descend in a beautiful courtyard next to the fountain.

Fauns and centaurs in armor came running into the courtyard with their weapons drawn. I didn't really take much notice to it. Firestorm bared her fangs, but with a small pat on the neck, she stopped but eyed them nonetheless.

"Who are you?" one of the centaurs asked as he came slowly closer, sword drawn.

I ignored him and slid off the saddle. I landed with a soft thud and closed my eyes to soak up the sun. This sunlight was different, less intense and pure.

"Stop right there!" a faun yelled. Pulling a notched arrow back, aimed at me.

Again I ignored him and started scanning the courtyard.

By this time, two humans came out of the castle to see what the racket was about.

A man in his twenties and a girl in her late teens. I had a vague idea who they could be, but I wasn't so sure, they definitely looked different.

I started to walk up to them when someone shouted, "FIRE!"

A barrage of arrows and spears started flying toward me. I heard Firestorm hiss and her pupils became angry slits. I gave her a light comforting touch, before waving my hand and turning the arrows and spears to sunlight.

A very useful technique if I do say so myself. Something my father taught me.

Everyone looked on in astonishment and fear as they started shifting around looking at each other nervously.

I looked back at the humans who now gained two more. And by the look on the woman's face, I knew they were who I was looking for. And then my eyes fell on the young man standing next to her.

He looked different, his eyes were darker and sadder and his skin had gone pale like he didn't go out into the sun much. He looked depressed beyond happiness. Guilt struck my heart with so much force that I nearly fell back about to breakdown in tears. I knew it was my fault he was so depressed, barely hanging on to a life he didn't want to live. But there wasn't a hint of recognition in any of their eyes. I was foreign to them. Did I look that different from when they last saw me?

The man with a golden crown atop his head, how did I miss that, came forward to address me. "Who are you?" he asked, his hand resting on his sword.

I didn't answer, I knew if I did, I would begin to cry. There was a lump in my throat and I couldn't breathe.

"Answer me," he said, his voice held so much authority. "If you do not answer, you will be killed."

And still, with my life on the line, I could not answer. But I internally applauded him for the way he held himself. He looked more comfortable where he stood than the last time I saw him.

He looked back at the depressed young man and nodded.

The young man nodded back and unsheathed his sword, there was a small fire burning in his eyes. I knew he wanted a proper sword fight, one that wouldn't always end in him winning so fast. Though he looked like he doubted I could hold my own, I could see the hope.

I could give him that.

He came at me with a swing. I ducked out of the way. The blade missing me narrowly. He tried to hit me, using moves I never seen him use before. But I was unarmed with a heavy sword, so I dodged every swipe.

"Fight me," he said in a harsh voice.

I unsheathed my own sword from the sheath in my saddle. He swung, I dodged and returned with a swipe at his legs. It was like a dance, a dance that wasn't rehearsed nor seen in a very long time.

My body moved without my comprehension. It knew his moves even though I had forgotten. Somehow his body knew mine. It went on for a while. Swipe, dodge, thrust, parry, swipe again; it seemed endless.

Then finally, I blocked his strike and stood my ground, his face close to mine. He was applying force, and I was trying to keep my hands steady. How long could I hold this?

We were panting and sweating. There was a blazing fire in his eyes and a light grin on his face. We pushed apart at the same time.

"Who are you?" he said in between pants.

When I caught my breath, I stood tall and said, "I am Alexandra, Lady of the Sun."

Edmund's POV

"Alex?" I said, still stunned that she was here.

She looked different, like she was glowing. Well that would make sense since she's the Lady of the Sun. But I barely recognized her.

I guess she finally figured out who she really was. She looked happy, I guess. More confident for sure.

"Yes, Ed, I came back, just like I said I would," she said with a small smile.

I didn't say anything, but then her smile faded.

"I see you didn't listen to me," she said, her voice drowned in sadness and...guilt? "I told you to forget about me, you didn't, I can see it in your eyes. You were depressed when I left, I know you were. You didn't stop thinking about me did you?"

Her eyes looked wiser; she looked like she knew everything. She looked right through me.

"I tried, Alex, I really did, but I couldn't forget about you, at all," I said in a small voice.

She walked up to me and held her arms out for me to walk into them and close the short distance between us. I didn't walk into them. I ran into them. I grabbed her tight and never wanted to let go. I picked her up and spun around with her in my arms. Her laughter was ringing in my ears. It was like sunshine. She was the sunshine in my life. I know how sappy that sounds but I just can't describe this feeling any other way.

Since she left, my life felt dark and gray. And now she's back and in my life. Her smile and laughter chasing the clouds away.
