"Where did everybody go? I haven't seen a survivor except for those two bikers," Warren says.
"Black Summer. Everybody starved to death," Garnett replies.
"I was in Philly for Black Summer," Cassandra states. "It was bad. I lost 30 pounds. Thought I was dead."
"How did you survive?" Addy asks.
"Did what I had to do." Suddenly, there was rustling in the cars, and someone came out with their hands up as Warren and Garnett raised their guns to him. It was one of the bikers!
"Woah he's not a Z," Warrens says.
"No bites here, hundred percent alive," the guy says.
"What happened to your friend?" Garnett asks.
"Turns out he had other friends of low morals. Took my ride. Poor Steve should be shot."
"You should choose better friends," Cassandra said.
"That's good advice..." he said, slowing his voice at the end of his statement.
"What can we do for you? One peaceful group of humans, two alone travel," Warren says.
"Could use a lift. Sure don't want to spend the night out here alone."
"Sorry, we ain't runnin a taxi service," Murphy says. I nod in agreement.
"Which way you headed?" Garnett asks.
"Any direction but back. Word is there's a hoard on the move South. On the New York side. I see you scrounging for gas. You know like we used to say, 'Ask ass or grass.' Nobody rides for free. I know where you could fill up."
"Now would be the time to share that information," Garnett states.
"Place called Jersey Devil refinery. Maybe, five miles off. Just off the turnpike."
"How do you know there's gas there?" Warren asks.
"Got overrun day number one. All the tanks are still full, just rusting away." Warren looks at Garnett, and Garnett looks around.
"Alright," Garnett says. "Take us to this refinery. And if there's gas there like you say, you can ride with us to the next outpost."
"You won't be sorry."
"Damn right." I say.
"Alright, let's get going. New guy ride with me and Warren. Everyone else, rides in the truck." I end up getting stuck in a car with Murphy, but this time, 10k would be there. I was also riding with Doc, who was driving, so that was cool. In the front though, Cassandra was sitting. Addy and Mack were obviously in the back. Murphy ends up resting his head, as if to fall asleep. I look at 10k and smile. It was a bit strange having him there, but I wouldn't want it any other way.
"So we're just gonna pick up every sketchy loser everywhere we stop?" Cassandra asks with frustration.
"Well we brought you along didn't we?" Murphy mumbles. "Besides, nobody consulted me."
"We're not really going to California with the guy, are me?" 10k asks me.
"You know, the apocolypse is a lot like rehab kid. You just take it one day at a time, and then do the next indicated thing. And in this case it means get more gas," Doc replies. "After that, who knows."
"We're doomed," Murphy mumbles. I sigh. Murphy ends up sitting up and looks at me. "So what was that comment about earlier?" he whispers to me.
"Nothing," I whisper back. "Just an observation. When you're a sarcastic ass, you're not as attractive as you could be."
"So potentially, you're saying I am attractive?"
"What do you think?" he sits back, with a smug look on his face. A few minutes later, we end up reaching the refinery. We notice something though. There's zombies everywhere.
"That's not a refinery," Murphy says. "That's a zombie factory."
"Fracking Zombies," 10k says. I giggle and we all get out.
"They seem to want something in there," Garnett says.
"It's that sound," Cassandra states. "Like bees to honey."
"Or Z's to shit," Murphy says. I snicker and he looks at me. He smirks and looks forward.
"Hey, you know about this?" Warren asks the guy that led us here.
"Hey all the easy gas is gone," he replies.
"So, what's the brilliant plan?" Murphy asks. "Die, get eaten, go home early?"
"What's that smell?" I ask.
"The undead and gasoline," Garnett replies. "Both highly flammable, so no fire arms of any kind." I put my head in my hands and sigh.
"You okay?" 10k asks. I look at him and nod.
"Yeah. I just need a break." he nods.
"I hear ya. But hey, at least you've got me."
"True." he smiles and hugs me. He then tells me he's going to sniper some zombies from a high point, and to not say anything. I nod and hug him, because I trust him. I know that he's good....damn good. Warren and Garnett come up with a plan, which sends off Addy, Mack, Cassandra, and the new guy.
"So, what should I be doing while you all are getting incinerated to death?" Murphy asks.
"Alright, Ally, Doc, take Mr. Congeniality here in the suburban to a safe distance. Just in case."
"What if, you know, Zombies?" Doc asks.
"If this all ends in tears, you've gotten get him to California." Doc nods.
"Sure," he replies. No problem." I get in the front and Doc drives us away. We end up getting board, so Doc takes his cards out and they start playing Go Fish.
