Amelia-
“Before I tell you anything, you have to promise me that you will sit here, not run away, and listen to the whole story through. It will take a while, and I don’t want you out of my sight.” His little warning had me second guessing my motives, but I held on to them fast.
“Yeah, sure, no problem.” He smirked at me before continuing.
“Then kiss me.” Part of me was more than eager to comply, but I tossed that part of me away. I couldn’t do that again, no matter how much I wanted to.
“Uhm, what? Don’t you think that’s a little...” I trailed off, not finding the right words. His smirk just grew wider at my uneasiness.
“Don’t you know? Everyone in this kingdom seals our promises with a kiss.” He stepped closer to me as a backed up into the wall. He looked down at me, and in an attempt to wipe away some of his cockiness, I stepped into him, our chests just barely touching.
“Oh, is that so? That makes so much more sense now as to why Lincoln kissed me earlier today.” I knew I would have to apologize to Lincoln for bringing this little lie upon, but the trace of guilt I felt disappeared as I saw Jackson’s reaction. His smirk instantly dropped, and he stepped away from me.
“You’re lying.” He said, while I could see the anger rise up in his eyes.
“Nope. Not at all. And I don’t see why you’re making such a big deal out of this. I mean, you did say that everyone in the kingdom sealed their promises in this manner. But, you know, I’m not complaining. I mean, Lincoln is an excellent kisser...” I trailed off as Jackson started towards me again.
“But not as good as I am.” He smiled and I couldn’t help but tease him some more. I held back giggles as I backed away from him, leaving the common room with him following me.
“Sure sure, you’re alright and all, but man, does Lincoln really know how to make a girl feel special.” I could practically feel his jealousy rise as I entered my room backwards and dramatically sighed, for effect.
By now my heels had reached the frame of my bed, and I feel back onto it, so that I was sitting down. Jackson toward over me as he continued standing.
“Do you really feel that way Amelia?” He asked as he slowly leaned forward, his breath swirling around my neck. My thoughts started slowing down as my heartbeat picked up. I leaned forward until our lips were just centimeters apart. I heard the small intake of his breath, and I smiled.
“Definitely.” I said and brushed my lips against his, then pulled back. He stood there for a few seconds with his eyes closed and a confused expression on his face. I moved to the farthest corner of my bed and sat down, giggling. “Story time!” Jackson glared at me, but his scowl quickly dropped and he smiled.
“I guess I deserved that for lying to you, but you better not have been telling the truth about Lincoln.”
“My my, somebody’s looking a little green now isn’t he?” I sang while he sat down on the bed a little bit away from me, completely ignoring my comment.
“Where to begin....” He sighed. “Well, first off, me and you, well, we’re...” He trailed off, frowning. “It’s hard to explain, so bare with me. The creatures we are... don’t have a name exactly. A lot of the creatures call us spirits though. We’re...kind of like ghosts. We can make ourselves totally invisible and fluid when we want to. So not only can you see through us, but you can also move through us. We are also like elves. We live in the forests, and are generally peaceful creatures. We inherited their nimbleness. And lastly, we are in a sense like angels or fairies, in that some of us have wings, but instead of being made from feathers, they’re made from plant materials. Usually we keep them uhm...I guess you could say glamoured, because otherwise they get in the way.” He trailed off, rubbing the back of his neck. “Another thing about wings, though, is that like peacocks, we use them to attract our uhm.. “mates.” That’s the first thing you liked about me, actually, because my wings are very very light.” Wow. Wait, if Jackson has wings...does that mean I do too?
“Jackson, do I have wings?” He bit his lip and his gaze dropped. That didn’t look like a very good sign.
“Yes, well you uhm...did.” He still wouldn’t meet my gaze.
“What happened to them?” He looked up, but saw my narrowed eyes and just as quick looked back down at his hands.
“In the uhm...well the accident...that made you who you are now, they kind of...gottornoff.Actuallyyoucutthemoffyourself.”
“I-I cut them o-off?” He nodded and looked up slowly. “How?”
“I’ll get there in just a minute. Your second question. Why are we the only light ones, while everyone else is dark? We’re not from this kingdom originally...well I’m not. You are. You see, as spirits, we are born into a world of black and white. The boys are called seekers, and the girls are called lights. That is pretty much how our...race is referred to, as seekers and lights. Once a male finds his light, both of them can finally see the colors that the world has to offer, that is, as long as you have your light.”
“So, technically, your uhm...”light” brings out the beauty in the world?”
“No, it’s the other way around. Once you find your light, the world brings out her beauty, and she pretty much becomes your whole world.”
“And...I’m your light? ..So that makes me your whole world.” I smug smile broke out across my face as he blushed. I gasped as he took my hands and looked directly into my eyes.
“If only you know how much that statement was true.” I blinked and wiggled closer to him, so that the outside of our thighs were touching. “Anyways, you belong to the kingdom we are currently in, the Night Court. That is why most people here are most active after the sun goes down. The king and queen, your parents, died in war when you were young. My parents, of the Illuminant Court, were uhm...I guess you could say that they were allies of yours. So they, along with myself, left our own Kingdom in the hands of my aunt and uncle, and came here to run your kingdom, since none of your citizens wanted to accept the throne. But because I am from a different court, along with my parents, we have white hair and wings..because we are the “light” court. You, on the other hands, had dark hair and dark wings until you became my light. My parents used to have light hair as well, but one they gave up the throne to us for the first time, their hair turned dark, as they became regular citizens of the night court.”
“Hmm. That’s really interesting. But wait, you said my parents died? But no...my mom just died, and my dad...he’s still alive. I talked to him just a few minutes ago...” I trailed off as Jackson took my hand and started playing with my fingers.
“And that brings us to the accident. You see, me and you got into a...fight over something that I said. And you got so upset that in order to leave me, and this world, you cut off your beautiful wings, drank one of our memory potions, and left. And because you always were a great potions maker, the memory elixir was so powerful, that you’re only now gaining back your memories, after 90 years.”
“It’s been 90 years since I’ve left. And...you’ve been without me for 90 years?” He slowly nodded and I felt so ashamed. “I’m so sorry! Man, I don’t even like when you leave me for a couple hours like you did earlier just to talk to Lincoln.” I noticed he tensed a little bit at the mention of Lincoln’s name. I chuckled inside at his jealousy.
“It’s alright, I have you now, and that’s what matters.”
“But Jackson, I’m not understanding. What could have been so bad that you told me that I would want to cut off my own wings? That sounds like it would hurt, like it’d be like cutting off one of my arms or something.”
“Well it kind of was. And...we don’t need to talk about that discussion again. It’s best left in the past.” I snuggled up to him and sighed. I’ll ask him about it later. He wrapped his arm around me, and pulled me against his chest. We stayed like that for a couple minutes while I mulled over everything he had told me.
“What no questions?” He teased me as I smiled.
“Well, just one.” I asked. “Can I see your wings?”
