Chapter 1: Hard day work

Jeanette POV

I wake up to someone yellin.

"Alright you Niger's wake up"

I know who they are we call them the punishers. They yell and, whip at people in the cotton field while we pick cotton. I is 16.
I started workin in the house cookin at 12. My momma was sold to someone else so was my daddy and brother.

I work in cotton field, clean the house, and, serve as master and friends watch big Willy fight. Big Willy is a good fighter. He fought 10 men and, killed them. I didn't mind watching them. I's had no choice.
Then my mind comes back to master Richard. I's blush. I gotta crush on him.

Well I guess it's time for work. I get up off my cot. I walk to the shed. Close the door. Then strip off my clothes and fill the bucket with water.

I then grab a rag and get it wet and put some homemade soap on it. I scrub myself real good and, wash off with the bucket of water. Then I get dressed.

My hair is frizzy today.

I walk out the shed, my bare feet touching the tough ground. Thin I see miss Lilith sittin in a rockin chair weavin a basket.

Then she's says "Mornin child".

"Oh good mornin miss Lilith" I say.

"Now you get on to work child you don't want to get a whippen" she says.

Then I run to the house. I walk in slip on some black shoes and, walk into the kitchen. I see Katty standin there makin breakfast.

"Hey Katty is the food done".

You see Katty is my best friend since we were babies.

"It sure is here you go" She says.

I carry the food up stairs walk into master and Madame's room.

"Master Richard, Madame Catherine time to get up".

Then I set the food down and open the blinds.

Then miss Catherine wakes up and stretches. She looks at me with a smirk then kisses master. She does that to everyone. Master hums and wakes up. Then I say

"Master, Madame breakfast is served".

Then he says "Jeanette" sternly.

"What is the time".

Then I stutter "I u-urm i-its a-".

"I got cut off its 8:05 Honey" miss Catherine says.

"What, I'm late" he says angrily.

But I'm not scared, master usually takes it easy on me.

"I'm sorry, I woke up late please forgive me".

He still looks angry.

Then Miss Catherine says "I think she should get a whippen".

He smirks "whippen it is".

Then I get hysterical and sob "no, please, I'll do better please".

"Time for a whippen" he yells.

Then the punishers grab my arms.

"Please" I yell before they drag me out.

We get outside to the log.

Then I hear miss Lilith say "oh no".

They strip my cloths off.

Then the punishers say "get on the log, hold on to it".

I do as told then wait. And without warning master strikes my back. I scream loudly. Then people from the cotton start crowding around, watching. I see Katty holdin on to my crying little sister.

He strikes hard again. I scream and cry. Then he strike's 10 more times very hard. Then master Richard strikes one last time and says "your done".

      I fall and yell In pain. Katty and Winny run to me.

Then Winny says "sis are you ok"?

"No" I wimper out.
