I rush down the hall trying to get to my locker as fast as possible. My mom had pulled me out of class with some "huge news" she had to tell me. Living in a small town with no family huge news wasn't exactlY common in my household. This made me panic, praying everything is ok.
I ran into the front office to see my mom calmly talking on the phone.
"Of course Im going to tell her," she said into the phone, "yeah she's here now I have to go." My mom quickly hangs up and shoves her phone in her pocket.
"Hi sweetie!" She cheers acting as if nothing abnormal was happening.
"Uh, hey...." I said confused, "what's the big news?"
"I'll tell you later, now come on." She turns and walks out with me trailing behind her. We pile into her car and for a couple of minutes, 5 out of the 8 it takes to get home, it was completely silent. Nothing but the radio playing quietly in the background.
"So," I break the silence ,"why'd you pull me out of school?" I look at my mom who's face is bright and cheery.
"Well, do you remeber my boyfriend Greg who lives in California?" She smiles giving off a radiant glow.
"Yeah I think so." I recall the tall, nearly bald, well built man that visited several months earlier.
"The long distance thing is getting very hard for both of us," she trailed on almost stalling, "so we decided to change that." She pulled into our driveway and I immediately notice the large moving van in front of my house.
"Oh my god mom is he moving in with us?" I groan and whine.
"Nope! Even better! We're moving in with him!" She beams.
I don't process everything that is about to happen to my life. It didn't sink in for a moment, but when it did I was speechless.
"We're moving to California!!" I shriek my eyes wide starring at the movers loading boxes into the van.
"Yes, we're leaving tomorrow morning. I already packed your bags and everything." She says pleased with herself.
"What the hell mom!" I choke back tears.
"Language" my mom shakes a scolding finger at me.
"You didn't think to give me any warning or anything?" I tried to calm myself down.
"I'm sorry Jennie, baby he proposed." She sympathizes with me.
"I can't believe this." I get out of the car and slam the door shut storming to my room. I lock myself in with my dog Maxie.
I look around and everything was all in boxes. I slump against the wall and sink to my knees. Tears begin to weld up in my eyes and before I knew it, I was bawling my eyes out. Maxie rested her head against me in the old dogs effort to comfort me.
Eventually I calm down and text my friends what's happening. I set my phone down and pet Maxie.
"You and me are going to have to stick together down there." I whisper into her fur. I sigh and my eyes feel heavier and heavier until I pass out on the floor. Tomorrow's going to be a long day.
I wake up to my mom yelling excitedly at me telling me to get up. I groan and roll away from her.
"Mom it's like 5:30" I complain covering my ears.
"Actually, it's 7:30 the van is leaving at 8 and if we're not on it, we don't go." She says. I sigh and get up changing into short Jean shorts and a white crop top. I quickly apply a coat of mascara and slip on white converse.
